Dictionary lookup not working right in Japanese

I'm using a Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation and reading in Japanese. After updating to 5.4.4.1 firmware, when I'm reading a book and trying to look up a word in the dictionary by tapping and holding it Kindle highlights the whole sentence until the next comma or period and tries to look up that. What it used to do in previous versions is highlight just the group of kanji symbols I was tapping on and look up that. The new behaviour makes it an absolute pain to look up anything as what used to take one tap takes at least three along with some sliding to narrow down the highlight, during which it does two extra lookups.

Was this a deliberate change? If it was I'd like an option to restore the behaviour to how it used to be as every dictionary lookup takes about 10 times longer than it used to.

Highlighting in English books works just fine, by the way.

Every book. They are .mobi files and dictionary lookup worked fine in previous firmware versions.

that is weird - unfortunately my Paperwhite is at home (it's my husband's) so I can't check on mobi files

just on the off chance - have you tried a full 30 second reboot of your kindle?

Yes, the problem persisted after reboot. The same thing also happens with at least .txt files. .htm files seem to work right, though.

wow, now I'm even more confused

why it would work on one type of file and not the others is really weird

do you read and write enough Japanese to try the Japanese Kindle Forum and ask there?

Ah, I think I figured it out. Amazon probably broke Japanese highlight support for filetypes other than .azw3 with the update. For files I send to Kindle by email it works because they're automatically converted to .azw3, files I moved with Calibre are still .mobi so it doesn't. Might be they do some processing to figure out the places to highlight and put that info in the file too, it seems to work better than before.

Mine is probably a pretty niche case, would be nice if .mobi highlights were fixed but I guess I can live with it.

Thanks for trying to help!
