If you do a Google search "how to put kindle books on samsung galaxy Tab 2' the first one that shows up tells how to do it. At least it did for me. I would suppose that the same method works for all the Tab numbers. I have a Tab 2. I downloaded all from my Amazon library a few months ago. I don't know if this is your question though since you said she read one already. But, you do need to download them onto your Samsung Tab. There will be several hits from Google, so you might want to read them all. Maybe someone else will come along with a better answer.

I am helping my friend that had a plain Kindle and I helped her purchased several books. Then she Decided to purchase a Samsung Galaxy... She read one of the books but the other purchased books will not open. Can she still get her purchased books? What do I need to do to help her?

As far as I can tell, you DON'T. This entire thread is about the fact that recent versions of the Kindle for Android application IGNORES all files EXCEPT those purchased from Amazon.

I have been very happy using FBReader, which is available from fbreader.org for just about all platforms. Feature for feature, I haven't found anything that the Kindle app can do that FBReader can't; and FBReader handles a variety of file formats: MOBI, PRC, and EPUB being the most useful. And, of course, because FBReader is available under a GPL license, from an organization that is NOT a publisher, there's no concern about being locked into a single provider.

The one thing that FBReader doesn't do is read books with DRM. That may be a problem for you. It isn't a problem for me, because I don't buy books with DRM.

"You can't send books to the Kindle apps on Android or iPad via USB, and Kindle for Android will not look for books on an SD card."

You're kidding, right, Bruce? Until version 3.6.0.87, that is EXACTLY how I put ALL my books on my Android device. I copied them TO THE SD CARD, which was accessible to my PC as a USB drive. And I read hundreds of books that were transferred that way.

Starting with version 3.6.0.87, the only books that Kindle for Android will recognize are the ones that it downloads from the Archive -- TO THE SD CARD (specifically, \mnt\sdcard\Android\data\com.amazon.kindle\files).

I updated my kindle app and installed an sd card and am now having the problem of an empty kindle - but following your advise, I found the files on the sd card. So how do you get the kindle app to read your kindle ebooks from the sd file?

same problem here on my Sony ion, I have tons of books that worked just fine before but now the app only shows a few most recent downloads and purchases... would be nice if this gets sorted soon, I don't always carry my kindle with me and its great to be able to squeeze in a few pages on the go using my phone!

What's up? I can't access a book I need for a class I'm taking. My Kindle app on my
Android tablet says the book is not compatible with this device. The PC app keeps crashing.
Both PC and Android have the latest version of Kindle app.

"Mike, Android tablets are basically a WiFi device so what is the big deal in installing books via WiFi? (Ditto iPads)

Or as Bruce suggests sending them using the Personal Documents Service. "

Pete, I would have no problem with either of those methods. However, as I have been working with a smart phone, not a tablet, I rarely bother to enable the WiFi functions. I was simply puzzled by Bruce's assertion that I COULDN'T transfer books by USB, because I never had any problem doing so. Of course, given that I have 722 Megabytes of e-book files on my SD card, I'm not really terribly excited about using the Personal Documents Service to transfer all 1,885 files in and out of the cloud when it's so much simpler, and faster, to dump them through a USB connection.

You can't send books to the Kindle apps on Android or iPad via USB, and Kindle for Android will not look for books on an SD card. You can send them using the Personal Documents Service (which is what I think you were doing using email), or download them from your Archives.

I'm having the same issues as many of you as well. I can add on my files to my phone via USB on to the SD card but i can't view my books on the kindle app at all. I had initially tried sending my files to myself via email and it worked for a while but the minute i plugged my phone in to charge on my laptop again the books disappeared. I know they're in there because i can see them on the management page via my amazon account and on my SD card but it won't show up on the app in either the archive or on device tab. I've tried restarting my phone and the kindle app and still nothing. PLEASE FIX ASAP.. thanks

On Jun 17, 2012 I reported SERIOUS problems with version 3.6.0.87 of Kindle for Android. Those problems included the complete inability of the application to find or open any of the 1,500 e-book files then (and still) stored on my HTC Sensation 4G. Several other people reported similar issues with files that are NOT purchased from Amazon (and therefore are not in the "Archive"). Files that ARE in the Archive CAN be read -- but each time the application is opened, it downloads the same file from the Archive to the same on-board folder, which already contains the file.

These issues make Kindle for Android completely unusable.

I posted again, two weeks later (Jul 1, 2012), noting that there had been no useful response from Amazon or the Kindle developers, and that the problem persisted. For the benefit of the other forum users who had similar problems, I reported that I had found an alternate e-book reader that was successfully reading all my DRM-free files.

It is now August 12 -- EIGHT WEEKS since my initial post. There has been no progress of any kind on this issue -- no response from Amazon or the Kindle developers, and no new version of Kindle for Android available in Google Play (nee the Android Market). This is, quite simply, unacceptable. I am now uninstalling Kindle for Android. I anticipate that, in addition to freeing up a significant amount of memory, this will eliminate the Synchronization that has been taking place every few minutes on my phone (whether it is in use or not), for an application that has seen no use in weeks.

It's really a shame that Amazon thinks so little of its responsibility to support customers who want access to the books they purchase on their Android devices that they haven't bothered to fix a CRITICAL bug, or even acknowledge that they have any plans to fix it, after almost two full months. While I have never felt that the "convenience" of having book purchasing integrated into the reader was worth being locked into a single vendor, it is simply appalling that Amazon hasn't addressed a bug that causes the same book to be downloaded EVERY TIME IT OPENED>

If Amazon is serious about allowing customers to also use the reader with books from other vendors (if they're not, perhaps we should get the Department of Justice to look into their monopolistic business practices), allowing this situation to persist without so much as a note to reassure customers that it will, eventually, be addressed is no way to prove it.

I contacted Kindle support on this to see if they could fix it for me. I went through two support tiers before they said they had to kick it back to engineering. Now I get to wait for up to a week for a solution.

did engineering ever get back to you?

Ok,
I got a solution to my issue (graphic novels not downloading and getting the error "unable to download"). I had to call kindle tech support and got transferred 3 times to different tech support levels, but finally got a tech who "Did something to my account" and all the graphic novels in my collection. I deregistered and reregistered and like magic I am good. I can download graphic novels again and the kindle app is seeing all my previous downloads. Not 100% sure what he did, but he was scratching his head for a good 15 min while he tried to figure it out. Good luck.

Indeed, reregistering is fixing the problem now. Thanks for the info.

I only just installed the Kindle app on my phone, so my problem wasn't that I'd lost access to books already on it since there weren't any on it. I was trying to find out how to get the app to see a book that I'd just downloaded on my phone from my PC (a MOBI file). I stumbled onto this discussion and thought "Oh, great. It looks like there's a problem now with doing what I want to do." Fortunately, it looks as if the answer may be a simple case of the default folder location having been changed. I put the file in the Android\data\com.amazon.kindle\files folder, then -- and here's the key -- I turned off my phone, then back on. When I went back into the Kindle app, there was the book showing up pretty as you please. Before I turned off/on the phone, it still wouldn't show up. Hopefully, this will fix the issue for other people with the same problem.

If this really is the only reason why people are no longer able to access the books on their phone or tablet with the app, I think it's rather sad that the Kindle people apparently haven't figured it out yet. Of course, this doesn't solve all the other problems mentioned here.

Mike,
the \mnt\sdcard\Android\data\ seems to be the normal location for Apps to place their default directory mine has various com.<devname>.<appname> folders. So why mine has ended up on the external SD card I'm not sure.

It looks like this change of location happened in an earlier release as my folder seems to have appeared in Feb 2012 which I think is around the time V3.4 came out, although I can't track down any version history for the Kindle for Android to confirm this.

When I first found the new directory it only had the .prc(s) of my purchased books. I only copied the .mobi files across, nothing else. I only have 5 and these have all appeared in the app and can be openned.

I only use my Kindle for Android on a rather occasional basis as I do most of my reading on my Kindle Reader.

I'm pursuing this via Kindle support at the moment as I'm having other issues with my Archive tab being incomplete, purchased books missing and the reccomendations bar being blank. Also I want to get the default storage back on the internal storage.

Hi not sure if this info helps at all but:
My mobi books disappeared after a recent upgrade. After a bit of digging I found that the default kindle data folder which used to be on my device:
/mnt/sdcard/kindle
seems to have moved to:
/mnt/sdcard/external_sd/Android/com.amazon.kindle/files
This actually translates to External SD card:
/Android/com.kindle/files
From the directory creation dates this seems to have happened on the 14/2/2012.
I moved my mobi files across to this directory and bingo they have all appeared in the app.

I'm not sure what the kindle app does if you don't have an external SD card installed?
I'm also not too chuffed that the Kindle developers have chosen to move the default kindle data storage to my external SD, with no option to force it back to the internal storage as I swap my external SD cards around I risk ending up with books scattered over various cards:-(

Richard,

That's very interesting. In my case, there is now a folder at:
\mnt\sdcard\Android\data\com.amazon.kindle\files
that appears to be the "new" storage folder for the Kindle for Android application.

Unfortunately, the application STILL doesn't recognize any files that I manually copy into this folder. The E-books that have been stored in that folder by the application are all .PRC files (!). I have tried copying .MOBI files and .PRC files, but neither become available in the Kindle for Android V3.6.0.87 application.

I have an HTC Sensation 4G smartphone, with a 4.28 inch screen. I have been very happily reading books on it for the past 6 months or more. With the arrival of version 3.6, the application no longer sees any of the books in my /SD Card/kindle folder.

There are nearly 1900 files in that folder -- 1660 .PRC and .MOBI files, and 226 .MBP files. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THESE FILES ARE DRM-FREE BOOKS THAT I HAVE PURCHASED FROM A WIDE VARIETY OF DISTRIBUTORS -- ****NOT**** FROM AMAZON.

Until about 11:00 this evening (EDT), I could browse, search, and read ALL of these books. Now, version 3.6 of the Kindle application can't seem to find a single one of these files.

I have tried the "Force Stop" that Will K. recommended. It had no effect. I have also tried restarting the phone. THAT had no effect. I have verified that the files are still in the folder, and that they still have the correct contents (I can copy them back to my PC and open them using any of a variety of applications there).

In addition, all of the books that I had purchased from Amazon disappeared from the phone. They are still in the Archive, and I can select a book there, at which point it is delivered to my phone (although, as near as I can tell, IT WAS ALREADY THERE), and becomes readable (although the application seems to have great difficulty keeping track of the most recently viewed page for any book with DRM). So, at the moment, I have access to the very small percentage of my books that I purchased directly through Amazon, and NO access to the far larger percentage that I PURCHASED from other vendors.

I don't consider this an acceptable situation. Although, UP TO THIS POINT, I have found the Kindle application for Android to be the best E-book reader available for this platform, if this restriction persists (either because Amazon has decided to remove support for books purchased from other vendors, or because Amazon has broken the application and is unable to fix it), my evaluation of the application will naturally change rather drastically. I would hate to lose my investment in the E-books I have purchased from Amazon, but I will NOT be limited to a single vendor.

Regarding the problem with downloading graphic novels: I finally got a response from Kindle support. It seems the Action Item in my Kindle Library "Deliver
to: Android Tablet" has been activated for the file I originally complained about, but not for any other graphic
novels. Now I can download one file but still none of the others. They still produce the error message "Unavailable for
Download", obviously because the "Deliver to: Android Tablet" option is
not activated. From the beginning I tried to explain that this might be a problem with the server settings, but apparently not clearly enough. Hopefully, an amazon official who knows what I'm talking about reads this forum and does something about it. Communicating with support doesn't seem to be efficient.

Yesterday I turned on my Acer Iconia android tablet , walked away came back and can only assume my kindle did a auto update, when I tried to access my kindle books, all 1500 plus were gone, then shortly started showing up in the archived section, wasnt sure what was going on, I couldnt remove the books from archive, to downloaded, when I would shut it off and turn back on they would all be back in archive again, finally I deleted the kindle app, and reloaded it , it will now let me reload to downloaded but the count is off.. and the idea of downloading one by one is frustrating, and now suddenly I have two suppossed android devices, instead of download to _____'s android device, there is now download to ____'s android device2, aughhhh someone please help, I have no idea what is going on!
