Amazon today announced that customers can now use Amazon Coins to purchase apps, games and in-app items in the Amazon Appstore and on Kindle Fire. To celebrate the launch, existing and new Kindle Fire customers in the U.S. have had 500 free Coins-a $5 value-deposited into their Amazon accounts today. Customers can purchase Coins by visiting amazon.com/coins.

Q: Is Kindle Fire 1st Generation supported?
A: At this time, Kindle Fire 1st Generation customers can't buy or redeem their Coins from the Amazon Appstore on their device. Customers can use their Coins on the Amazon Appstore on Amazon.com, and then download their purchase from the Cloud tab. In-app items also can't be purchased with Amazon Coins on Kindle Fire 1st Generation.

Q: Will I receive 500 coins for each Kindle Fire I own?
A: Only one award is available for each customer, regardless of how many Kindle Fire devices you own. You can see your Coins balance when viewing an Amazon Appstore product detail page, and also in the bottom-right corner of the Appstore on eligible Kindle Fire devices.

Q: How can I see my Amazon Coins balance?
A: To see your current Amazon Coins balance, go to the Appstore on your Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, Kindle Fire HD 7", and Kindle Fire HD 8.9", and then tap the balance tab on the bottom-right of the screen. You can also go to a detail page of any eligible app, in-app item, or game to see your current Amazon Coins balance.

If you own a Kindle Fire 1st Generation, go to a detail page of any eligible Appstore item on Amazon.com to see your current Amazon Coins balance.

Additions or deletions from your balance can take a few minutes to update. You can also go to any eligible app, in-app item, or game detail page to see a refreshed view of your balance right away.

Q: Can I use Coins to buy Appstore items for my non-Kindle Android device?
A: You can use Amazon Coins to buy Kindle Fire-compatible apps, in-app items, and games on your Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, Kindle Fire HD 7", and Kindle Fire HD 8.9", and apps and games on the Amazon Appstore on Amazon.com. If you use your Coins to buy a Kindle Fire-compatible app, in app item, or game that is also compatible with your non-Kindle Android device, you can use that item on your non-Kindle device.

Q: Do Amazon Coins ever expire?
A: Amazon Coins that you've purchased never expire. Coins that you've been awarded expire 12 months after you've received them.

Q: Can I apply Parental Controls for redeeming Amazon Coins?
A: Amazon Coins follows the same parental controls that are available for other payment methods.

Q: How can I see my Coins transaction history?
A: To view your Amazon Coins transaction history:
1. Go to Your Orders page, at (https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/order-history)
2. Click "Digital Orders." Note that on this page, your Coins transactions are represented in the equivalent dollar amount.

I have a first generation Kindle Fire and my account has the 500 coins in it. I redeemed 99 of them for scribblenauts unlimited remix on amazon.com from my computer and that transaction has processed successfully and deducted the coins from my balance.
The app is listed on my Fire under cloud apps, but when I go to install it pushes me to the app store page. On that page, I can not download, it says it is available for purchase.
I'll check again in a little bit to see if this solves itself, and if it does, update here.
UPDATE: After just under an hour the app is available to download on fire appropriately. Enjoy your coins everyone.

The same has happened to me with the Diner Dash Deluxe (Kindle Fire Edition) on my Kindle Fire (1st Gen). The coins were deducted from my balance and I have received and order confirmation. However, I do not have the app on my device, not is in my Cloud. I have restarted the device and even gone into the app store to see if it would display the "install" icon instead of "purchase". It did not. I'll wait out the hour and see if it has resolved itself and update in kind. Let's hope this isn't a trend in the making.

EDIT: It took a while, but the app showed up in my cloud about after a 45 minute wait. Sorry it took me this long to update on this, and thanks to anyone that tried to help. Enjoy your coins, all.

My Kindle Fire HD still shows "0 coins" on the tab in the Amazon appstore. I have tried doing a hard reboot, but I still don't see the 500 coins we are supposed to have. If I tap the tab, I only see a bunch of choices about how many coins I can purchase.

Edited to add: I eventually got my 500 coins about 16 hours after my original post. Thanks to whoever or whatever accomplished it for me.

Pat,

Have you synced your Kindle Fire HD?
With Wifi on,
From the 'Home' screen,
Swipe down from the top of the screen.
From the 'Quick Settings' menu that comes up, select 'Sync'.
Then...
Select 'Apps' along the top menu of the 'Home' screen.
Look under the 'Cloud' tab. If needed, sort by 'Recent'.
After finding your app, tap on it and it will download & install onto your Kindle.

Joy, "long press" the book...hold your finger or stylus on it for about a second. You'll see a choice to remove it from the device.

These are my unofficial answers to a couple of questions I've had asked:

Q. How is sales tax assessed on Amazon Coins?

A. Sales tax is not charged on the purchase of the Amazon Coins themselves. However, when you purchase an app, appropriate sales tax will be collected, just as if you had purchased using another payment method. That could reduce the amount of Amazon Coins you have left.

Q. Can I combine my Amazon Coins with another payment method in a single purchase?

A. No, but you can purchase more Amazon Coins at that time. Below the price, you will see the payment methods and the number of Amazon Coins you have. You can click the link that says, "Why can't I use my coins?" That will open a window with a link that says, "Buy More Amazon Coins". You could then buy the additional Amazon Coins you need using your regular payment method, and then purchase the app with your increased Amazon Coin balance.

Can I use amazon coins to purchase books for my kindle?

Luis, no...the Amazon Coins are used in the Amazon Appstore. There are some apps that are basically interactive books...those are generally for kids. For regular Kindle store e-books, the Amazon Coins do not apply at this time.

Here's a search for "Book" in the Appstore:

If you have other questions, please post below.

I own a second generation Kindle Fire. When I discovered that Kindle Fire users received 500 free coins I looked on the bottom right corner of my screen while in the app store yet nothing was there. I then asked a friend who owned a second generation Kindle Fire as well and his coins were there. Any advice? My kindle is registered to this account.
