Richard - To restore your apps' cover art:

1. Restart the device - hold the power button until it asks you to Shut Down and select Shut Down. Turn it back on.

2. Clear App Data for the Launcher:
*Tap on Settings (round gear icon)
*Tap on Applications
*Tap on All Applications
*Tap on Launcher and then "Clear Data"

Thanks Pineapple. Sorry for getting back to this post, been out of town. Actually, once I restarted the device, all the cover art reappeared. It they disappear again, I'll try your fix.

I was experiencing this symptom too. Icons would gray out but would reset when restarted; however, would gray out again following the restart. Found this post and applied fix. Would have been nice if Pineapple would have mentioned that the device would reset all icons which would remove all of your favorites. Currently reestablishing my favorites and testing fix for grayed out icons. I hope it works!!

I am having the same problem with certain app icons appearing as gray boxes. BUT, I tried the suggestion above and it did not fix the problem. The same app icons are grayed out. AND I now have the problem of reinstalling all of my Favorites and clearing the Carousel of EVERY book and document on my Kindle Fire. I do not recommend this fix!

I have tried these same fixes but my icons are frayed out for ever app that did not come pre-loaded. I have completley erased my kindle reloaded apps from the cloud, and shut down re- started mutliple times but icons are still gray. Help!

I had the same problem. I turned the wifi off and the fire (1st gen) off overnight. It may work being turned off for a few hours. It worked for me.

Sorry, but this fix didn't work for me. Also cleared cache. Rebooted numerous times. Any other suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Is your Kindle connected to Wi-Fi, Rhonnie? It will need to be in order to re-download the cover images for your content.

If you are connected, and those steps still don't help I recommend contacting our Kindle Specialists. They'll be able to check out what exactly is happening. Use the Contact Us button on the right hand side of this page, or here's a direct link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/contact-us

Hi Micah...first of all, thank you for responding. My Kindle is connected via Wi-Fi and what I wound up having to do is power off my modem and Wi-Fi router and unplug both. I let them sit for about 3 minutes and plugged everything back in and powered it all up again and everything's copacetic regarding the icons now. I'll need to use your link, though, for different matter regarding a stalled update for Sims FreePlay. Thank you again, Micah, for your prompt response.
