Why was I charged for an item (book) that was supposed to be free to me as a prime member?

A book I'm interested in reading is listed as free to read by Amazon Prime members. I assumed, since I am a Prime member, that I would not be charged when I clicked the Buy button. However, this was not the case. How do I get this book "free" as advertised?
