There is a trade in program, but you don't get very much for it. You would probably get more asking friends if they would be interested and selling it yourself. Many people like having an e-ink Kindle as well as a Fire because they each do something better than the other. E-ink is better for reading books since the battery lasts longer and it is easier on your eyes. It can also be read in bright light as in outdoors. The Fire does videos, magazines, and using the web better and it can be read in the dark, but is awful for reading outside.

You cannot use a Kindle 3G for credit on a used/new Kindle Fire. You would have to sell it outright, or see if a trade-in value is acceptable to you. With a credit in the Trade-in Program, you can receive a gift certificate toward a new Kindle Fire. As reg said, the reading on Kindle is much better for outdoors, if the Kindle Fire is something you would frequently outdoors.
