When Goldblatt received the Hasselblad Award in 2006, he had been making photographs of the South African landscape and culture for more than 50 years. Born in 1930 in a gold-mining town near Johannesburg, his parents were Jewish refugees from Lithuania. Since 1999, Goldblatt has been studying various aspects of the post-apartheid society. These color photographs, previously unpublished, of symbols and structures in the South African landscape bear witness to the country's continued complexity.
