Knowledge of other cultures is important, and I think Americans do not place to much focus on the rest of the world, unless it affects them. My special areas of interest are the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Latin America, and Africa. I live in the west suburbs of Chicago and work as a manager in a factory. I am a CQE, CQA, and SSBB. I have a BBA and an MBA. I am now working on my second Bachelors in Economics. My interests are traveling, reading, and collecting. Ambrose is my favorite author. All Quiet on the Western Front is my favorite book, especially because it depicts the tragedy of war. I don't read too many novels.

The author does a great job of detailing the early garment industry in metro New York at the turn of the last century. It was indeed a time when capitalists did not invest in their workers, and treated them as just another resource to be used and thrown out. The owners of this factory were no different. They exploited their workers by locking them in with only one guarded exit. They also had mysterious fires at the end of each season, resulting in large claims to their insurance carriers. All in all, not very humane employers. The large fire that started on the eighth floor, and spread to the ninth and tenth resulted in over 150 deaths. Yet no one was held responsible. A criminal… Read more

Grant may rank as one of the worst US Presidents, but this book makes it plan he was a man of principle. He was associated with scandals, but many were not his fault. Grant was a single minded general who pursued victory over the Confederate forces. For this he was listed as a butcher. His earlier travails with alchohol resulted in him being termed a alcholic. His associated with disreputable people was caused him to be associated with scandals. Late in life he was defrauded and his memoirs were a way for him to guarantee a life after his death for his beloved wife Julia.
This is a nice read on a noble General and President. Honor was a way of life with U.S. Grant, and… Read more

A great book, followed by an OK movie. This book shows that not all Jews gave up the fight when faced with the Nazi forces. Some Jews fled to the forest, where they accumulated guns and food. They mounted resistance to the Germans and their proxy forces. I admire the Bielski Brothers for their courage to face tremedous odds and forces against them. Their courage showed the Nazi forces that not all Jews surrendered meakly.
I read this book in one sitting. It is an easy read about human dignity and courage. I also have the other book about this subject called Defiance, and I can't wait to start this book, even though it has a slightly different prospective.
