Don't let the modest packaging fool you. These are wonderful performances of two favorite works that, for all their obscurity, stand up to the best and most recent versions out there. I had found this "CD-Wallet", put out by the budget label Vox, in the bargain bin of the local music store years ago. I picked it up mainly because it was so cheap (98 cents!!!), but over time, it became one of my favorite CDs.
The recording comes from 1977, and is one of the first Robert Shaw made with the Atlanta Symphony, before they signed with Telarc. And while it is an analog recording, the sound is clear, not muddy, with a minimum of hiss. I think the analog actually makes the whole disc… Read more
