I love reviewing, love hearing good (or at least thoughtful) feedback from those who read the reviews. Hopefully one day I will do this professionally.

Ghost stories should be spooky and mysterious. Otherwise, what's the point? Unfortunately, neither thrill nor chill shows up until after the halfway point of "The Revenant," and even the few spooky moments aren't really scary. Sonia Gensler does provide a fascinating glimpse of the Cherokee Territories and the people who lived there, but her heroine doesn't get a lot of development until the book's end. When her mother summons her back to the family farm, Willemina Hammond is desperate not to return. So she steals her rich classmate's unused teaching certificate and heads to the Cherokee Female Seminary in Oklahoma, posing as Angeline McClure. She's immediately… Read more

Relic DVD ~ Penelope Ann Miller

A museum doesn't seem like a logical place to find a giant primordial reptilian monster with a taste for brains. But that seems to describe "Relic," which is loosely based on a novel by Douglas J. Preston and Lincoln Child. It tries mightily to add the "Alien" monster-movie aesthetic to a more cerebral setting, but the sludgy pace and massive plot holes make it a chore to sit through -- and no matter how many gory body parts it flings at you, nothing really horrifies. A ship arrives in Chicago with its crew horribly murdered, and Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta (Tom Sizemore) has no idea what has happened. The cargo -- crates from a roving anthropologist -- is sent to the… Read more

In ancient Anglo-Saxon culture, a "sceop" was a storyteller. A sceop might not be telling a story of his own, but he tells it with grace, elegance and power. It seems like an appropriate title for whoever originally wrote the classic story of "Beowulf" -- a full-blooded, rich epic poem about a young hero who is called upon to slay various monsters. That's a tale old as time, but I can only advise people to find a more graceful translation than Gummere's -- it's too clunky and literal. A creature named Grendel is attacking the beautiful mead-hall of Heorot, sneaking in at night to carry off and/or kill innocent people. King Hrothgar is powerless to stop the monster. But… Read more

The only thing better than a scary movie is a movie that is both scary and funny -- and more often than not, they end up being far more entertaining.
Essentially, these are books that bend the mind, and the idea of what a book should read like -- metafiction, braintwisters, and humorous stories about the love lives of vampire. It's also a good place to start with more avant-garde literature, stuff that doesn't fit neatly into the&hellip Read more
I for one am sick of vampires today.
Currently it's all the rage to have a brooding, wangsty vampire who would never ever bite an unwilling victim, and who therefore is as menacing as a blob of cold oatmeal. Nobody in these books believes that you would lose your soul or chance at heaven just by&hellip Read more
Finding good vampire movies is a bit like finding a diamond in a vast pot of glass beads. It takes you forever, and you're going to find a lot of duds along the way. ("Queen of the Damned" anyone?)
What's more, you're very unlikely to find anything but stereotypes and recycled&hellip Read more
