I write book reviews with a purpose to help you find the books that will be most valuable to you and your family.
Many people ask about my reading and reviewing habits. Here are answers to the most common questions:
1. I rarely read books that authors or publishers offer to send me. 2. I read 2-3 hours a day. On an average book, my speed is around 2,000 words per minute. I learned how to read quickly and with good comprehension during my sophomore year in high school. 3. To go faster yourself, read more words at one glance until you can do one line at a time. Learn to stop 'hearing' the words in your mind. Then do two lines, etc. Next, do one paragraph at a time. Then two, etc. Use tests to check your understanding as you go faster. 4. Study Proportional Reading to find software that can help you read faster, up to 1000 words a minute, with more comprehension. This also works for dyslexics! 5. Reading aloud to children of all ages helps them bond with their parents, develop emotional stability, and improves reading skills and intellect. I worked with my youngest child to review a series of her favorites. I hope you and your children (or grandchildren) enjoy them! 6. If you have a new book that will help many people, tell me why you think I will like your book and how it will help readers. 7. I describe my philosophy of book reviewing in detail and propose how you can be a better book reviewer in Adventures of an Optimist.
I like to help people learn how to become better Christians. As an example, you can read about the winners (May 14, 2007) and runners-up (June 12, 2007) of the contest I sponsored to locate the best ways to save more souls at my blog Live Spiritually Better than a Billionaire.
To assist in improving your life, I also head the 400 Year Project (showing how you and the whole world can make improvements at 20 times the normal rate by eliminating bad habits that delay progress and using more effective methods for improving).
I am a professor, strategy consultant, and coauthor of business books exemplifying the 400 year project. For a summary of the project see Adventures of an Optimist. See free excerpts of other books about the project at other online sites.
Other books I have coauthored for the project are The 2,000 Percent Solution (explaining you how to accomplish 20 times as much with the same time and resources), The 2,000 Percent Solution Workbook, The 2,000 Percent Squared Solution (explaining how a business can accomplish 400 times as much with the same time and resources), The Portable 2,000 Percent Solution, The Irresistible Growth Enterprise, The Ultimate Competitive Advantage, 2,000 Percent Living, and Help Wanted.
Thank you, Helen Coster of Forbes, for writing a generous profile of my reviewing on December 1, 2006.

"But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." -- James 1:4 (NKJV) This book cannot be too highly regarded for providing a valuable template for football coaches and showing how to thoroughly and effectively organize any complicated undertaking. Bill Walsh reveals a combination of intelligence, character, integrity, and attention to detail unequaled in my experience. As much as I admired watching Bill Walsh coach the 49ers, I think the on-the-field results were never nearly as impressive as this book is in explaining the foundations for all of that success. Many people succeed for either the wrong reasons or due to… Read more

"But this is a people robbed and plundered; All of them are snared in holes, And they are hidden in prison houses; They are for prey, and no one delivers; For plunder, and no one says, 'Restore!'" -- Isaiah 42:22 (NKJV) If you are like me, you've been reading translations of Harry Hole novels for some time. Those references to solving crime in Australia have probably both baffled and intrigued you. Well, you can find out what it was all about by reading The Bat, the first Harry Hole novel. If you haven't been reading the Harry Hole books, then you have a great many treats ahead of you. I think you'll like the series best if you read the books chronologically by… Read more

"And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope." -- Romans 5:3-4 (NKJV) If you are a fan of the past novels in this series, don't miss this one! It has developments that will interest you. Since I started reading mystery novels more years ago than I care to recall, I've always been drawn to difficult puzzles, fair clues, subtle misdirections, and the opportunity to "solve" the crime before the author reveals what has happened. In recent years I've noticed that some mystery novels have become more like novels and less like traditional mysteries. Such works have to… Read more

Favorite Items
The first book that had a big influence on me was Gone with the Wind which I read when I was seven.
I've read so many excellent books since then that it's hard to single out just a few.
The book I spend the most time with is the Bible, reading it in many different translations.
In the field of management, no one matches Peter Drucker. Almost everything that is written is derivative of his thinking.
Shakespeare's plays are also a favorite place to roam.
William Faulkner is my favorite American novelist.
I prefer most of the books in the classic library to modern fiction.
Classical music is my favorite because of its complexities and richness. Beethoven is my favorite composer, followed by Mozart, who is followed by Mahler, who is followed by Stravinsky.
I like most kinds of traditional Christian hymns and carols, and contemporary Christian music using lyrics drawn from the Bible.
I saw Goldfinger over 40 times when it first came out. Around the World in 80 Days was also a big favorite of mine as a youngster. Since then, The Graduate sticks out.
When I started my consulting firm, I used to watch Star Wars when I was feeling discouraged.
