I'm fortunate to live near an arthouse theater that has been having special screenings of Summer Wars (just got back from seeing it an hour ago, actually). It was shown in Japanese with subtitles, which was great. And I ended up being more than pleasantly surprised by the film, despite the fact that the film quality was dreadful (that had more to do with the theater than the movie). I'm therefore eagerly anticipating this blu-ray release, and highly recommend it (or the DVD version) to all anime connoisseurs. In fact, just two weeks prior I watched Evangelion 2.0 in the same theater, and while I'm a TREMENDOUS Eva otaku, I think SW beats it hands down. The sheer emotion of the characters… Read more

I have loved Eva for almost 15 years - it was one of the anime that truly defined me as an otaku. While I was initially suspicious of the new Rebuilds, I have been pleasantly surprised. This was a delightful surprise. Make no mistake, while most of the cast is female, this has all of the sensibilities of a shonen sports anime. It has a wonderful sense of humor, with the capacity to be serious at times without being melodramatic (a lesson many other anime series need to learn). Most notably, BB manages to avoid the pitfall many other series with all-female protaganists fall into: needless fan-service. None of the girls are paraded around as lolicon bait for pathetic male fans, as in garbage shows like Burst Angel. They all have personalities and charm. I would show this to any young girl otaku, as something high empowering. I highly recommend this sleeper gem.
