Face of a Killer by Robin Burcell
Face of a Killer by Robin Burcell
Face of a Killer is an unusual police procedural in its focus on a police sketch artist. And who better to write about this topic than someone who has done it professionally? It's always easier to suspend disbelief when the writer has intimate knowledge of her topic, as Robin Burcell so obviously does. (The chapter heading graphics of a face are a cute touch.)

Another plus for this entry into the crowded genre of police procedurals is that the plot is based on a true-life international banking scandal involving the CIA and black ops, which Burcell seems to have carefully researched. With almost 30 years in the criminal justice field (as a legal affairs reporter, criminal investigator, and forensic psychologist), I have developed such a low tolerance for inane, sensationalistic, and/or poorly written crime thrillers and mysteries that I mostly avoid the genres altogether.

Young filmmaker Cary Fukunaga spent months in Mexico, interviewing both immigrants and gang members about their experiences. He shot on location, and many cast members are nonprofessionals. For example, Edgar Flores, in the lead role as a member of the Chiapas chapter of the brutal Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, is straight off the streets of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Despite the specific setting of the tumultuous U.S.-Mexico border, Sin Nombre addresses powerful and universal themes of damnation and redemption. At least, that's how I saw it. In an… Read more
