My newest book, Wee Little Chick, is now officially available. I'm so excited! It's already gotten a starred review from Publisher's Weekly -- they love John Butler's adorable illustrations as much as I do. Here's a taste of the book:
It was spring in the barnyard
and the wee little chick
was all brand-new.
This wee little chick
was the littlest little chick.
"My, you're so tiny!"
bleated the nanny goat tall.
But the wee little chick
stood tallest of them all!
... as she perches atop a pile of hay, proud and not at all deterred by her smaller size -- or others' assumptions about her. At the end, Mama Hen delivers the ultimate affirmation: "Tut, tut, tut! She's my wee little chick and she's just big enough!"
When I think about it, I was one of the shortest in my class during most of my childhood; and after my brothers hit adolescence, I became the shortest in my family. Maybe that's what inspired me to write this "Short? So what!" kind of story. What do you think! ;-)
Coming up is Wee Little Lamb, also illustrated by John Butler. The wee little lamb is a shy little lamb -- and that's okay. (And yes, I was very shy as a kid.)
Enjoy!
