In My Own Words:
I enjoy reviewing housewares, cookbooks, movies, music, DVDs, and software. For my cookbook reviews, a five-star cookbook will have very clearly marked ingredients and step-by-step instructions (bonus points for illustrations and/or photographs) and a variety of good recipes that are virtually foolproof (if a cookbook only has one or two appealing recipes, then it's marked down a star). As a rule, I make at least three recipes from every cookbook I review (these are referenced in my reviews).
My interests include linguistics, travel, counted cross stitch, cooking / baking, 1940s big band, swing, and the Great American Songbook.

On The Priests' sophomore CD, Fathers Martin and Eugene O'Hagan and Father David Delargy tackle another round of soul-stirring hymns and religious music, including How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace, the Lord's Prayer and Silent Night. The Lord's Prayer deserves special mention for the powerful a capella rendition; it's the only track not backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, thereby evoking the power and grace of early plainchant. The English-language version of Silent Night opens and closes with a tin whistle and is more traditionally paced than the uptempo version of "O Holy Night" from their debut. The fathers composed the music for "King of Kings" themselves. Nods to their Irish… Read more

Melody Gardot's impressive jazz debut Worrisome Heart channels the retro piano jazz of Diana Krall and Holly Cole while remaining uniquely original. I loved the album, but wasn't sure how the sheet music would translate.
Published by Alfred Music, Worrisome Heart features nine of the ten album tracks (the album closer Goodnite was more of a sonic unwinding than a song) in the same sequence, beginning with Worrisome Heart. The song translates well to a piano-only medium, retaining its bluesy vibe (the piano picks up the bass part along with the piano melody). The acoustic guitar melody of All That I Need Is Love translates to the right-hand melody, while the Norah Jonesesque… Read more

In Claire Kilroy's "Tenderwire," protagonist Eva Tyne, an aspiring solo violinist, is confronted with her deepest desire: to possess a newly-discovered Strad offered at a fraction of its market value. As the novel opens, Eva, who relocated from Ireland to pursue her musical dreams, has a painful debut which results in a rush to the hospital (the full impact of this isn't revealed until the end of the novel). Afterwards, dulled by painkillers, she sets out into the night and meets Daniel in a hotel bar. Daniel, a handsome Latino investment banker, seems destined to be a one-night stand, but will play a significant role in Eva's life. Soon after, Eva runs into Alexander, a sketchy "antiques"… Read more

If you're a fan of the CW's adaptation of L.J. Smith's The Vampire Diaries (which predate Twilight by a decade, thank you very much!), here's the tunes heard in the show. (Thanks to http://wiki.vampire-diaries.net for the info!!!)

I live to bake for family, friends and coworkers; the fancier the dessert the better!
I listen to pretty much anything under the sun. My favorite genres are 1940's jazz, swing and standards, vintage Motown, classical, and international.
I have a soft spot for Australian sci-fi children's series from the late '80s - early '90s, including Spellbinder, The Girl from Tomorrow and Ocean Girl. I also love supernatural/vampire series.
