Common has one of the most consistent discogs of any hip hop artist out there. The only perceived blemish is the experimental Electric Circus (which was all that bad in my opinion). Be comes right on the heels of Electric Circus which led to much speculation about whether or not he still has "it". He answers his critics in amazing fashion.
This album is produced chiefly by Kanye (9 of 11 tracks and 2 from J Dilla) and the pairing seems Be a match made in heaven. Kanye's samples give Be a soulful twinge that matches perfectly with his deep lyrics and soulful voice. This is most evident on the powerful song "The Corner". This movie is very well made, but it may be a bit tough for some people to digest. This movie starts you off at the "end" of the story and takes you back to the begining. You are immediately thrust into the life of a man with a type of memory loss that prevents him from remebering things for more than a few minutes at a time. He has no idea of what happened to him or why. The most ineresting thing about this movie is that for the most part you only know as much as he knows. This technique is very effective in that it keeps the viewer on the edge from the start of the movie to the surprising ending. This movie truly symbolizes the "struggle" as it is so often put. While some believe that this movie glorifies the "gangster" lifestyle, I for one believe this is simply a wonderful insight into the rise and fall of a man hungry for power and wealth. Although Montana sold and used drugs and was a very ruthless killer, he was also a victim in a way. He simply wanted the "better" things in life and given his background he saw only one way for him to do it and this thirst for power and money engulfed his very being and eventually led to his downfall.
