Tom comes from a media/communications background. His grandfather, Richard J. Finnegan was co-founder of the Chicago Times which is today's Chicago Sun-Times. And his father, Willard J. Loarie, was EVP for J. Walter Thompson advertising agency.
The family home in Deerfield, Ill. was often filled with reporters, editorial cartoonists (including Herblock), politicians, TV stars, and other media personalities.
Tom spent his college years at the Universities of Notre Dame (BSME), Minnesota (grad school), and Chicago (Grad School). His passion has centered on improving/saving lives through the global commercialization of innovative medical products. Tom is an accomplished healthcare executive and medical technology entreprenuer (see http://www.linkedin.com/profile?viewProfile=&key=20676); writer and sought after speaker in the field of medical technology and entrpreneurialism; and an accomplished cartoonist and oil painter. Tom also serves as a Trustee of the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley, as Advisory Board member to the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California (Berkeley), as a board member for several privately-held medical technology companies, and as an advisor to several non-profits. He has served as guest lecturer at the Anderson School of Management (UCLA, the Haas Business School (UC Berkeley, and the Grazidio School of Business (Pepperdine Univ.).
Tom writes the column, "CEO Learnings," for the Catholic Business Journal, and is writing a book with the same title. His wife, Pat, is the world's best real estate agent specializing in the Tri-Valley area (east of San Francisco). They have four children, and ten grandchildren. They love to travel, golf, and snow ski.

I grew up in a media centric family and have been an ardent student of communication since my teens. I learned a great deal through osmosis from my father, his advertising buddies, and my grandfather (founder of the Chicago Times, aka Sun-Times). This interest has never flagged, has been a constant companion, and has served me very well throughout my life. I know firsthand that effective communication is the key to influencing others and getting things done. I have had an opportunity to work with some very aggressive and smart medical technology executives from the Asia-Pacific - China, India, and Malaysia - over the past few years. My interactions with them and their teams has sensitized me to what author Ram Charan has captured in his just released "Global Tilt; Leading Your Business Through the Great Economic Power Shift" - a major global shift of economic power is underway and many in the "North" are blind to what is happening.
