In this satirical glimpse of a fairytale world known as Thunderland, Alice--a young woman from the land of Harmony--comes upon this strange land one day. She was out fishing, but fell asleep, and her boat was swept away. Here she meets "femblies," who warn her about asking too many questions, and who constantly remind her of her place. This is all a foreign concept to Alice, who is from a land of equality. She soon learns that in Thunderland, women are subservient, while the men call the shots.
Like our Alice in Wonderland, this particular Alice feels as though she has stepped into an alternate universe.
She is curious, though, and follows along the various… Read more
It is a tale of friendship, a story of growing up, and a nostalgic glimpse of the past through the eyes of the present-day characters.
Noelle and Joel were high school and then college friends. Theirs is a relationship of near-misses, bad timing, and immaturity. But for some reason, they each hold onto their friendship, which they describe as like an interrupted sentence.
Then one night, they cross a line. And nothing is ever the same again.
They move onto different pathways, choosing different locales for their adult lives, as well as marital partners. But they pick up the thread of that interrupted sentence in their occasional phone calls and… Read more
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program(What's this?)
In Scottoline's collection of essays, excerpted from her "Philadelphia Inquirer" columns, we follow her adventures through the minefields of motherhood, love, men, and Spanx. Yes, that's what I said. Her hilariously funny take on those particular garments, as well as other aspects of "middle-aged" life, had me laughing all the way to the last chapter.
Her views on finances, food, pets vs. men, and how the mother-daughter relationship shifts over the years are so relatable that I couldn't stop reading.
I especially enjoyed her perspective on resolutions. She has what she calls "unresolutions," which are simply things you're already doing that you don't want to… Read more
Once upon a time, I began reading about love. But then I discovered something even more satisfying than "pure romance." Women's fiction. Some call it Chick Lit. And then I found something additional, when I began reading about the effects that politics and sociological events had on&hellip Read more
I decided, at some point, that I would create a second childhood for myself...one that featured wonderful collections of dolls, etc. It was a fantasy. But I began to realize this dream when I first found my dolls and other images on Amazon.com.
I already had a charming wolf, so I decided that&hellip Read more
I also love books by Janet Fitch, such as "White Oleander" and "Paint it Black". Barbara Delinsky's "Family Tree" is another favorite, as are books by Marge Piercy. Another author on my list is Betty Dravis, author of "1106 Grand Boulevard".
I love country singers, like the Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. I'm also a fan of oldies from Elvis, the Beatles, and the Eagles.
I enjoy psychological thrillers, such as "Mr. Brooks", "Match Point", and the oldie "Fatal Attraction". My romantic favorites include "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle". I was also captivated by the dramatic movies "House of Sand and Fog" and "Little Children".
