Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is the first novel I have read by Michael Wallace. It is an interesting plot and clearly believable in light of recent convictions of fundamentalist religious leaders. This book is part of a series and I had the strong feeling while reading the novel that I would have found it much more enjoyable if I had read the previous books first: This novel does not stand on its own. The plot revolves around Jacob Christiansen who is now the Prophet for this Mormon sect. Well, there is a rival sect to be dealt with and the murders begin piling up. The story revolves around microbiologist Hallie Leland who is sent to work with the scientific team in place at Antarctica and in a twist of irony replace her friend who died mysteriously. Well, it doesn't take long to determine her friend was murdered after making a rather significant scientific discovery in a lake under the ice. The pacing of this book is excellent there are threats everywhere and it seems no one can be trusted and the bodies keep piling up until Hallie can unravel the mystery… Read more

"Rules of Crime" (Thomas & Mercer 2013) is the tenth Detective Jackson mystery by L.J. Seller and the first I've read. It won't be the last. It opens as Detective Jackson is trying to relax and wind down on a Hawaiian vacation with his girlfriend, bored by all the easy-going life and manana attitude that is part and parcel of island vacations. He is horrified (but secretly thrilled) to receive a frantic call from his daughter that his ex-wife and the mother to his child is missing. Though he isn't too worried--his ex has an alcohol problem--he uses this to escape paradise and return to the rush and tumble of an active investigation. From, there, the drama never stops as we join… Read more
