If possible, this would have been a 4 1/2 stars:
I will probably drop my subscription to an online homiletic service. These volumes have everything you need for good solid scripturally based lectionary preaching. A few "timeless" illustrations in the "Homiletic Perspective" column would be helpful. I plan to purchase all 12 volumes.

I love the 4 different perspectives (theological, exegetical, pastoral and homiletical) on EVERY text in the lectionary--not just the gospels. The perspectives are fresh, interesting, and helpful in many ways and on many levels. I highly recommend this commentary to anyone who preaches or is interested in learning more about The Bible.

I am so grateful that these books are available for Kindle. When I first discovered them, it was as a print resource, and I loved the insights and help for preaching, however, I did not want to buy them because books are very cumbersome and it is hard to take them wherever. As a preacher always on the move, it is very helpful for me to have them on my ipad.

If you are looking at getting this book, you are most likely a Lectionary preacher. As you are aware, there are two different formats for the text. The one most often referred to is simply the standard texts. There is also a secondary text where the Old Testament text is changed to harmonize better with the Gospel text.

In Feasting on the Word, Year A and the first half of Year B focus on the standard texts. The second half of year B and Year C all use the alternative texts.

I have found these to be an excellent resource in fully understanding the text, and particularly appreciate the pastoral focus. In a way it is like listening to four different sermons on the text as you read through. Whenever possible, I have been purchasing the Kindle version, since the regular hardcover edition is in small print.

This series is the very best of Bible study helps for anyone who is interested in the scriptures. Based on the lectionary calendar, it is excellent for both group and solo study, and sermon preparation. If any of this set of books were lost, I would replace them immediately. This volume is my first try at study in the Kindle format. I think I'm going to like it, as I read each week's section in full, highlighting helpful texts. Then, I study my highlights carefully, and soon begin to write. Being an old codger, I still prefer paper books, but this set doesn't add any weight or bulk to my Kindle, so I can work anywhere I happen to be.

I would like a full-size keyboard for the Kindle, to keep in my glove compartment or saddlebags; thay would improve the already great experience of owning a Kindle

I have been a pastor and preacher for nearly 20 years and believe me, I have tried them all. While there are some VERY good one out there like The New Interpreter's® Bible One-Volume Commentary,Genesis: Interpretation: a Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching or Women's Bible Commentary, Feasting on the Word is HANDS DOWN the best blend of Biblical insight, theological inquiry and pastoral care.

First, if you google some of the writers and editors involved in this project, you will soon discover that these folks are top-shelf academics, theologians, preachers and pastors. This is where the brillance of this series comes in. For each set of Sunday Lectionary readings you receive a perspective from all four of these perspectives: theological, biblical, homiletical and pastoral. This way a preacher is able to get a broad yet, concise view of the Scripture upon which he/she can build firm foundation for a particular sermon shared with a particular community.

Second, if you are a preacher that preaches from the above mentioned Lectionary tradition (If you are not familiar with the Lectionary check out:The Revised Common Lectionary: The Consultation on Common Texts), this is the best series I have ever used. A close second would be the New Proclamation a Adv Hly Wk, but over all, Feasting on the Word is the one I would spend my money on.

Third, honestly, while you can now get many of the volumes on Kindle, the publishers have done a great job of choosing a look, feel and layout that is pleasing to the eye and touch. They include the readings, a four column layout that is easy to read and the cream/brown color scheme just feels classy.

If you are looking for a gift for a pastor (your own or yourself) or you want to start a seminarian's book collection, you cannot go wrong with this series as well as the many worship and liturgy resources that are beginning to role out.

I began using Feasting on the Word a year ago and each volume continues to deliver excellence. Each perspective helps give me something to chew on, it helps jump-start some great ideas to preach on, and I end up knowing so much more about the selected passage than I did before. Plus, God definitely speaks to me through the whole process. Though it is designed to help pastors coordinate their efforts with liturgy preparation, I'm Baptist and I find it to be very compatible with my preaching efforts. I highly recommend Feasting on the Word for any pastor who wants a quick and yet thorough discection of God's word to aid in preaching preparation.

This is an excellent Lectionary resource for any minister; great scholarship. It explores the scriptures from many angles, with many authors and will provide more than ample inspiration for some great sermons. I wish a resource of this nature had been available during my 'active' ministry. I bought a copy for two minister friends of mine first; then this copy for myself even though I'm retired. It is probably more than the average Layperson would be seeking; but a full cup for those who want more. I purchased this item through Amazon.

Having the Theological, Pastoral, Exegetical and Homiletical perspectives on the texts all together is a real plus. This book will not replace other comentaries for extensive study. But it's just right for the preacher. The lay-out is a bit unusual at first glance - but makes great sense once it is understood.

One negative - It's a series, and this retired pastor is going to have to spend hard earned pension money purchasing other volumes in the series.
