I purchased this book (kindle version) with very limited Cisco experience. I had a decent networking background (i have my MCSA, but no real world experience in network engineering or administration), but not a lot. This book was excellent. the author does a GREAT job at explaining the concepts of each chapter in detail. When showing configurations, he will talk about the principal of the configuration, show how it is done, with the output, then explain why you saw the output and why it works the way it does. I purchased this book, a lab book (something like 101 labs for CCNA) and got a copy of packet tracer. I probably averaged 60-90 minutes of study, 4-5 days most weeks. It took me about 5 weeks to get through the material of the book. After that, i went through and reviewed the questions at the beginning and end of each chapter and did some labs. I took the test another 3 weeks later and scored an 850 on my first try. I am going to purchase the ICND2 book by this author later tonight, and start on the material this week. This is an EXCELLENT book for someone with limited networking background that wants to learn the basics of Cisco Internetworking.

There is also a LARGE emphasis on subnetting. This is because you NEED to know subnetting to pass any cisco test. Take your time to review the practice questions at the beginning and end of each subnetting chapter, as well as in the appendices. They are awesome, and explain the answers, and how to get there, in great detail.

Wendell Odom does a thorough job of covering all the materials on the ICND1 exam. The troubleshooting sections also provide really good information on scenarios that you would expect to see on the actual exam. It can sometimes be a tough read, and Odom can be extremely dry at times. I don't mean to imply that the author is bad. If it wasn't for this book, I probably would not have earned my CCENT. However, I struggled to keep focused at times. But the important thing to be tenacious. After I finished this book, I was able to score a 925 on exam.
It comes with a practice test engine that (in my opinion) was harder than the actual certification exam. If you are able to pass the practice exams with an 80% consistently, you are probably ready to sit the actual exam. The only downside is that the practice engine does not include simulations. It's all multiple choice or select the correct answer(s). For the actual exam, the simulations are weighted more than the regular questions.

If you have the money for it, I would definitely recommend the Boson ICND1 practice exams to supplement this book. It includes simulations and material that closely follows the format of the actual exam.

If you have a difficult time reading technical books, you might be better of reading Todd Lammle's book. However, if you have the tenacity and capacity to endure, you will be rightfully rewarded by finishing this book. This, by far, provides more depth than Lammle's book.

I was able to pass the ICND1 Exam based almost exclusively using this book; however, I would recommend to others to spend more time on the practice exams than I did, as it made for a nerve-wracking experience having to pass the exam without lots of practice test experience. Once I got to about Chapter 4, I scheduled my exam date 1 month in advance, and I spent about 1 hour per day reading/studying the material... by the last few days before the exam, I was really having to push myself to finish the last of 24 chapters, and I finished it the evening before the test, and was up until 3:00am taking practice tests, because I knew I was in trouble if I didn't... well, I squeeked by, but I tell you, I wish I'd had a few more days to prepare properly, and spend more time on taking practice exams.

This is a very detailed book. It does need more emphasis on key points. There are end of chapter quizzes, the writing doesn't have any major takeways from the chapter.

Took a little longer to get here, but worth the wait.

Very well written for the exams and as a learning tool for the old ICND1 exams. The practice exams helped a lot as well and using them I passed the ICND1 the first time after a couple months of intense study. Very good book!

This book is an excellent resource for preparing for the ICND1 exam - it covers all of the exam objectives thoroughly and is explained in a very clear but comprehensive way. The hardback version comes with a pretty cool Pearson test engine, which is a handy way of validating if you're ready for the exam, plus a network simulator "Lite" version. This is really just a demo to entice you to buy the full simulator, but its actually pretty good. It is like an ugly, slightly less polished version of Packet Tracer. Still, pretty nice as a little bonus feature with this book. Would definately recommend this book.

I purchased this book because I am taking an online Cisco class and thought it would be great to have it up front instead of reading online. I have no Cisco experience what so ever. I have already read the first four chapters and I feel the author does a great job of explaining things. Very Very fast shipping. I order this book on Tuesday and was delivered to my front door step on Thursday with the standard shipping fee. I am very pleased to have received this book so fast.

I've read a couple of CCNA books and like this one the best. It has filled in some of the gaps that the other books left. The info that I didn't know before probably isn't necessary for the test but is good to have for understanding how everything works together and will help you in the long run. As everyone says it is a little dry but has what you need to know in a way you can understand it.

After some background to networking I had decided to invest in this CCNA book kit. I have really enjoyed the book thus far and would recommend anyone that is interested in improving their own knowledge on networking. It is easy to read and all Windells examples are basic and easily understood, this book is for experienced users as well as a great introductory book.
