I purchased this as a gift for my mother. It's a bit of a special purpose item that may not be suitable for everyone. The entire thing is one "cork" and must stay on the wine bottle to function. This was perfect for my mother, as she'll only ever have one wine bottle open at a time. Wine-tasting types, though, would probably prefer one of the more expensive vacuum cork machines that can seal multiple bottles.

The Oster Vacuum Wine Cork seems to work exactly as advertised. The initial use was a little confusing. After installing the two AAA batteries that came in the package, the expectation was that the buttons would do something when pressed, the display would light, or something to indicate that it was "on". On the contrary, nothing will function until the device is actually one the wine bottle (which is actually pretty intelligent in retrospect). Once on the bottle, the top button will initiate the vacuum sequence, which takes approximately 60 seconds to complete (the LCD display shows a countdown). After the vacuum seal has been created the LCD display will show the temperature of the wine to (to one/tenth degree) in either Fahrenheit or Celsius (toggled via the button directly below the display). The bottom-most button releases the vacuum seal (another 60-second countdown cycle).

All in all, the device seems to function very well and creates a tight seal even before the vacuum. My mother has only had the vacuum cork a few days now, so I can't speak to how reliable it will be over time. Nevertheless, construction seems to be of good quality.

My brother sent me as a gift. It didn't work. I went through three sets of batteries trying everything to get it to do what it says it does. And, yes, I read and reread the instructions. Prior to throwing it away as junk and stop wasting batteries, I decided to tear it apart and see what was inside.
Note: Not for the clumsy of fingers.
I popped off the black top and carefully pried off the silver ring on the bottom and removed a small screw. This exposed the workings inside. With removal of four more small screws, I was able to get to the pump and sealing mechanism. The pump is a small piston that pushes on a small, silicon, two-sided cup which, it turns out has a rough and a smooth side. The rough side was down so I turned it over so the smooth side was down. This made sense to me for keeping a seal on the vacuum that makes the whole thing function. I put it all back together and VOILA! it works as advertised.
It's done a great job keeping leftover wine fresh up to a week since "repair." I think the discrepancy in the reviews may be based on poor quality control on this pump part. If you get one put together right, it's great. If not, not. Thus the low rating as the consumer shouldn't have to repair a new piece of equipment and sending a defective one back is way too much hassle for this product. It is ingenious and, when working, really does what it's supposed to.

So far I have tried it on about 6 different 3/4L bottles and it only worked on 2 when the bottle was 3/4 full with liquid.
Further it uses up batteries very quickly. More detailed instructions would be helpful.

I ordered 2 of these. One for myself & one as a gift.
The one I opened for myself indicated error after about 2 minutes attached to a 2/3 full wine bottle.
After about 4 tries (and error indications) it indicated low battery.
I thoroughly read the instructions in case I'd missed something.
I could hardly give the other one as a gift after such a poor performance.
I wish I 'd read the reviews.

I received the Oster Wine Vacuum Cork as a gift. Right out of the box it wouldn't work. I called the warranty number listed in the instruction book and was treated to the longest telephone robo menu I have ever experienced. When I finally arrived at warranty service for this product, I got "we are busy try again later." I went on line and found the local Oster service center. I called them and was told I needed the receipt to get it repaired under warranty and that I had to pay shipping. It's a great idea and was a wonderful, thoughtful gift to receive. However, it didn't work and Oster's customer service sucks more than their vacuum cork.

Title says it best, it sealed the first time. Failed to seal the next time and stopped working within one day.

I should have listened to the other review that said that it doesn't work and only gives an error message. That's exactly what happened to me. Now I have to deal with repacking this and returning it....Spend the extra money and get a better quality one that will actually work....or just finish the bottle so you don't have to re-seal it!

got this product as a gift for my mother and it never worked right, just buy some of the cheep o wine stoppers that you manually suck the air out with. works way better than this overpriced piece of crap

This is a terrible device. It's almost impossible to get it to create the seal and lock, and it eats up batteries.

I ignored the other reviews, because "what a cool concept", I thought. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt. I had hoped the other reviewers were simply not using this device correctly. Sadly, this is a "piece", as they say. It worked the first time. Even impressed me by allowing me to place the bottle horizontal in the fridge without spillage. It seemed to be creating the vacuum as it promised. After this initial use, each time the display would show "ERR" (meaning error). I believe it was still working to some extent, despite showing this message.

Can you imagine the frustration associated with trying to use a device which displays "error" to you over and over again? That is what this product will offer you, guaranteed. 2 stars: Great idea and fun toy, but a painful experience awaits the future owner.
