I collect healthy cookbooks. I'm a natural foods chef. It's an addiction. That said, I've also watched Gillian McKeith when she had the "You are What You Eat" show on. She is an amazing doctor that is able to find the root cause of health issues rather than just treat the issues. Since watching her show, I've heard more and more doctors begin studying the tongue, the eyes, the skin, etc in the very things she mentions on TV and in many of her books to tell you what's going on with your body...and often it does begin with a bad diet.

The difference in this cookbook is it's not just a healthy cookbook or a weight loss cookbook..it makes you healthy with foods that enrich many things...your liver, kidney, skin, for example. You just feel so GOOD and light after these meals. And your body responds.

I have many of her books, but this is my absolute favorite as I feel it's the most full of easy to do recipes, it's full of great smoothies, things I really love eating, and some of the healthiest meals on the planet...she remembers healthy and light proteins, monounsaturated fats, amino acids...you spend a month on these meals and you will feel and look different. At least I did.

Of all the books I have by the author, this was my favorite purchase.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon January 27, 2011
Format: Paperback
This book contains many healthy recipes that follow Gillian McKeith's formula for well-being. However these will probably not be recipes that the younger members of a family with `picky' appetites will look forward to; i.e. fruit salad with warm pear sauce, eggplant and chick pea tagine. You will have more than 150 recipes of a different sort to serve though.

Gillian's guidelines contain the philosophy: "her way or the highway". She describes her guidelines, her viewpoint and gives several checklists to get you organized if you desire to try her ideas. The recipes include; juices and smoothies, breakfasts, soups, salads and lunch box meals, main meals, snacks, treats, stocks, sauces and dressings. There are not many pictures of the completed recipes themselves.
This would be good for those who want to try a formula for healthy eating.

If you can check this book out at your library, do so first before buying it. The recipes are very bland and repeatedly use the same ingredients. I do not agree with the author's view that carbs and protein should not be eaten together, as it is a pretty popular belief among nutritionists that protein slows the absorbtion of carbs into the blood stream, which reduces elevated blood sugar levels. In addition, our bodies need BOTH carbs and protein for sustained energy. I am a very athletic person, work out almost every day, and already have a very healthy diet. I also work 10 hours a day and believe these recipes too impractical for the average working person. I think this book could be geared for people who may have a substantial amount of weight to lose and are interested in following a "plan" that is both cleansing and low calorie. IF they could stand eating the same stuff every day. I believe these recipes are too low in protein to support an athletic lifestyle, I'm not talking about a daily walk here, but running, weight training, cycling, etc. There's no way you can build and maintain muscle with the recipes in this book. A much better cook book, in my opinion, is Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone.

This book has tons of recipes, some easy and some difficult. Most of the recipes are vegetarian and lack protein. The first day of trying this, I made breakfast, lunch, and dinner from this book. The taste was ok I was able to consume this knowing it was going to do my body good. The worst recipe I made from this book was the vegetarian chili. It called for cardamom and the taste of it totally overpowered the chili. Cardamom is a very pungent spice and taste like flowers. I would suggest trying ingredients first before incorporating them into your meals. You can substitute some spices I supposes as long as they are not too unhealthy. Overall I will probably continue to use this book for some recipies but not all.

We watched Gillian Mc Keith shows in England, and are fans. She really whipped people into shape with her no nonsense nutrition and pushes to get moving. She showed people LOVE nutritious food, if you can just get it down them, and teach them to shop and cook this way.
