I did a lot of reading about the negative ions etc. Reading that some hospital operating rooms use them to help prevent infection made me give it a try. So after a month I can state it improved my wife's sleeping incredibly. For years she's awakened several times a night blowing her nose from allergies. She has refused meds. It doubles as a white noise machine. She sleeps much better and so do I since she's not blowing her nose all night. We use this unit in a smaller bedroom 16 x 14 and it works fine. The only minor gripe is the bright lights on the front but duct tape cured that. Highly recommend.
As far as the pre-filter being pricey. My wife could tell it was not working as well so I cleaned it. I've only cleaned it twice and not replaced it in one year with an air blower from an air compressor. Blowing out the way it came in. It's not cheap as stated but how much is 6 months sleep worth? People spend thousands on special beds etc.
It's like a divorce, expensive but worth every penny in the end.

I didn't know I was allergic to cats until my girlfriend brought home a cat, well, I didn't know I have asthma either... Long story short, I only have problem breathing at home and it got worse when we moved to an apartment with no windows in the living room. I needed to use my inhaler almost everyday.
I did some homework online and decided to go with sharp because of the reviews and the reputation of the brand. I picked it up at my local bestbuy 3 weeks ago... Guess what? I haven't use my inhaler once since! It's freezing outside so we couldn't open the windows to air the apartment out as often as we like. But once you turned on the purifier for 15-20 mins on high speed, my apartment actually smell fresh as if we aired out the place. My girlfriend also noticed less dust and pet hair on the furniture since we have the machine.
At night, the noise level is barely noticeable on low and med, acceptable on high. If you are concerned about the cost and availability of the replacement filters based on some reviews online, you shouldn't be! They last a lot longer than most other purifiers out there and you can find them easily online. As long as you vacuum the prefilter at least once a month, I can see how the HEPA filter can last up to 2 years as claimed by the manufacturer. Honestly, in the age of global e-commerce, I don't see how anyone would have problem finding any products online.
If you have any indoor allergies like me, then this purifier is for you. This purifier will pay itself off with all the allergy medications and cleaning supplies you save!

Seems cigars are making a comeback. Well, now that the weather is nice, my smoking guy and his buddy, once a week, sit right by the window where the smoke migrates right into the bedroom.
Ah, nothing quite as nice as the smell of a good cigar, right? Sure, until it is time for bed and the entire room reeks of stale cigar and my husband smells like a wet dog that has been left outside with mange.
To the rescue! This thing removed ALL the cigar smell within about an hour. It is amazingly quiet! My daughter decided she wanted it in her room the next night- Well, young lady, if you did your laundry, your room would smell better- Oh Mother...
Lo and behold, her room did smell better even with all the dirty laundry on the floor. I don't know how this thing does it, but it works. The filter only needs to be replaced every two years according to the instructions, so it is cost effective, too.
It is quite a bit bigger than I expected; however, the results are amazing. I had planned on buying one of those small $50 models. I am so glad I bought this. I can literally smell my neighbor two houses away light up a cigarette- with an acute sense of smell, it can be a blessing (like if the pilot light was out on the furnace) or a curse when there are smells that make it hard to breathe. This really does remove odor and make the air easier to breathe.

I've lived in 3 countries and owned 5 different air filters, various brands. This is by far the best I've ever used. First of all, it works. When my allergies kick in, I turn this on and in 30 mins. I'm back to normal. Secondly, this really is whisper quiet. My biggest complaint with past air filters was the noise level - even on the lowest settings they would intrude on peace & quiet. With this one, on the lowest setting it's barely noticeable - I forget it's on. The "Quick Clean" feature is really useful - I just hit the button, say before going to bed, and it runs on high for 15 mins & then switches to the inaudible low setting. It's a bit larger than I would like, but light & easy to carry around the house and has a clean, attractive design. Highly recommended.

I live in Florida, where the summers get humid and nasty. I have really bad allergies in my apartment primarily due to the outside pollen, allergens etc. But, also the apartment has carpet in the bedroom and living room, which I'm sure doesn't help.
I bought this Sharp Plasmacluster with HEPA air filter for this reason, as it got very good reviews.
I must say it is a very solid product.
First of all, even on MAX fan speed, it is much quieter than the central A/C in my apartment. When I set it to LOW or MEDIUM fan speed, I can barely hear it running at all.
Secondly, I must say that I do believe my allergies have gotten better, and sleeping at night, I don't get a stuffy nose as I did before, prior to purchasing this unit. It is definitely cleaning the air in my apartment, and doing a very good job. My next step is to purchase a vacuum with HEPA filter, that should help with the carpet issue even more.
I keep the unit in my bedroom, about 5 feet from my bed. Before going to bed, I switch the QUICK CLEAN on. Then I go to sleep, and after 15 mins, it automatically goes back down to MEDIUM fan speed, which I basically keep it on all the time.
The unit is designed very solidly, it has handles on both sides, and has a very solid, premium feel to it.
It contains 2 filters, which can be accessed by removing the front cover. Again, it is very well designed, as it hooks on the top, and clicks in on the bottom on both sides -- easy, and elegant.
The 2 filters are:
- The HEPA filter (according to Sharp this filter should be replaced every 2 years -- WOW!)
- The Deodorizer (according to Sharp this should be replaced every 6 months) as I am not specifically concerned about odors, I am not too worried about replacing this that often, I might extend it a little bit.
Overall -- this is not the cheapest Air purifier/HEPA filter around....however, as frequently in life, you get what you pay for.
It is definitely worth a few more dollars for a good night's rest in my books.
I am extremely satisfied with this unit.

I like this air purifier. Purchased to eliminate smoke and odor of cigaret, works very well so far, smoking odor is gone within 10minutes in a small room. A big (but not loud ) noise on max mode is one star down. Recommended.

If you have allergies, I recommend this item. It seems to produce a clean, crisp air in the room. It seems to help with my sinuses after one month of use. I have dust mite allergies-I also use allergen resistant pillows/sheets.
Has a 0.3µm filter.
Very quiet from a few feet away. I can sleep with it on at lowest setting.
At medium setting, it is like a medium-loud whisper from a few feet away.
I put a tape over the green light button as it seems bright at night (but not a big deal)
It had good reviews so I bought one.
It is a bit large in size, but it seems to do the job and is quiet.
Note: If may be possible that if you have an old dusty carpet or constantly leave the windows, you may produce dust and allergens much faster than your air purifier can clean the air...thereby reducing its ability to do its job.

I bought 3 of these air purifiers from Amazon. It does what it says and I cannot believe how much the filter traps every week. We have a house full of cats and we are very clean people. But as clean as we are I noticed that we had particles from the cats dander in the air. I am so happy I purchased these because they do what they say. They are not as energy efficient as it states but well worth keeping the dust down in our home. I purchased on Amazon a sheet of carbon filter used for appliances which is a better carbon filter than the unit provides and I think it works better and is also more reasonable in price! About $7 verses $50 on a replacement sharp and it works perfect! I would highly recommend this product!

Focus: I used this unit for several weeks compared to the FPA80UW. This unit is very loud on the medium setting even after getting a replacement. In comparison, the FPA80UW did not make any noise on the medium setting and that device moves more air
The device itself was easy to unpack, setup, and get working. It definitely seems to leave a very clean smell that has the 'Ionic' effect to it. It works great for the little space that I have, but it can make some noise.
1) Light and easy to move around
2) Easy setup and teardown. This looks easy to keep clean and maintain
3) Keeps the air clean if you put it in a centralized location
4) Well packaged
1) Fan is cheaply made in this unit. It is always making noise on medium and sometimes on high.
2) Doesn't always clean well if places in a corner or near a wall. This doesn't have as much sucking power as it does pushing power in the fan
3) Some of the plastic pieces that connect together were cheaply designed. Be careful opening and closing the front cover
