I have to start this post by being very honest, as parents, we always want our children well and taken care of. Yet, sometimes when my son is sick, I just don't want to take him to the doctor. Franco is 20 months old and attending daycare, he is always coming down with one thing or another, so I requested The Portable Pediatrician to review as I heard it was the best tool a parent should have in their home. Simply said-this book is awesome!

Sometimes, we are not sure whether to take our child to the emergency room to wait endless hours, for something that may not be life-threatening. Well, that is where The Portable Pediatrician comes in. This book is a must have reference for every home regardless of your child's age. The Portable Pedetrician is part of the Dr. Sears Parenting Library that was recently released on February 23rd and covers everything from a common cold, ear aches, teething to learning disabilities, vaccines and so much more. This book even goes from newborn development all the way to puberty. It includes charts and little synopsis of when you should worry, seek a physician or simply try a remedy at home. The Portable Pediatrician is that basic but also that extreme, discussing common illnesses to more serious diseases.

The format of the book is easy to read and similar to an encyclopedia, with all topic listed from A-Z which I found very convenient. The information provided is practical and detailed. I have had this book for about a month now and have had the chance to put some of the advice to practice. The results were great. Please know however, this book is no way to be used to eliminate medical for your child, but simply, to be used as a helpful guide. I just love the fact that I have something to refer to when Franco is not feeling well.

I am a mother of three young kids--a kindergartener, preschooler and infant. I have almost all of the Sears books, so I was hesitant about getting this one. I am so glad that I did! It is loaded with valuable information, tips and is very easy to read. I looked up every illness and reason I have ever gone to the doctor's and all of them were included in this book. And who better than the Sears family to get information from?! Love it, needed it, and hope every family gets it!

THE PORTABLE PEDIATRICIAN is a comprehensive guide, totalling 554 pages, not including the index, covering the health of infant through preteen. Health is a gift one cannot take lightly or purchase for our children, the next best thing is having the gift of knowledge. Based on the best science, medical references and the most current information available THE PORTABLE PEDIATRICIAN provides this for you. Beginning with an introduction on how to use the book it moves fourth to chapter I titled "Four Things All Parents Must Do to Keep Their Children Healthy," from choosing the right doctor to tips on providing the best nutrition. Chapter II explains the importance of "Well-Baby" and "Well-Child Exams" from vaccines to school sports physicals and more. Chapter III lists "Pediatric Concerns and Illnesses" alphabetically, including treatment, causes, what to do, when to worry, home remedies and so much more. Chapter IV of the book "Medicine Cabinet," guides you through giving medicines to your child to allergic reactions and more. There are very helpful Dr Sears Tips throughout the book with the index at the back for quick reference.

This is a large book, don't expect to sit down and read this whole book in one sitting, for many reasons. Although the Sears authors give the reader the most important points of each illness, that a parent or caretaker can take care of, it is best to come back to the book as your child develops and the need arises. Another important thing to remember is that each child is an individual and your child may never experience some of the illnesses in this book in his lifetime. The Sears authors stress the information provided in this book is not meant or intended to replace the medical care of a physician, so be sure to follow the advice of your child's doctor first, especially and most importantly if any particular symptoms arise that may require immediate attention or during a medical emergency This guide is one of the best to keep on hand for anyone that cares for children. I recommend it to all expectant parents to begin reading before their child is born. Whether you are a first time parent, a parent of 10 or a grandparent, THE PORTABLE PEDIATRICIAN is for you. It truly is one of the best health guides for children I have read.

What a fantastic book! I also have the AAP equivalent, and this book absolutely blows it out of the water. Thanks to Dr Sears for another great addition to our library!

The Portable Pediatrician is a new book by the Sears family, a comprehensive guide to children's health. I have several of the Sears' books and this one has definitely earned a place on my bookshelf. It covers basic child growth, with a blurb on each of the well baby check-ups, and then the bulk of the book addresses pediatric concerns A-Z. After seeing the price on Amazon of only $14.95, I wasn't expecting the book to be as big and thorough as it is!

AskDrSears dot com has been on my list of go-to websites for quite a long time now. If one of my children has a fever or a rash or some other concern, I usually look it up there. Because I was curious as to how the book would compare to the website, I looked up a few concerns in both. Although the website is very helpful, the book does contain more information. The website is great for looking up photos of rashes though, as the book does not have any pictures.

I really enjoy the Sears approach and writing style. They are very down to earth, great at explaining the facts and telling you when to worry and when not to. I love that they respect parents and empower them with information rather than speaking down to them. As a mom who often goes the natural treatment route, I appreciate that I can use this book along with other natural remedy books. I don't feel like the two conflict because The Portable Pediatrician respects parent's choices and offers plenty of information. I highly recommend having this book on hand as in invaluable resource.

(I did receive a review copy of this book from the publisher, but all opinions are my own!)

I bought this because of the high reviews, but honestly I rarely use it because Google searches return so much more information. I can see this being useful if perhaps the electric goes out and you have an emergency, but really it's a very large book that just takes up room on the bookshelf.

Ordered the book for our NJ daughter who has her first baby; book arrived while we were visiting; every time I looked for the book, someone was reading it; a dozen subjects got researched in the 8 days we were there from cradle cap to charts on wt/height to diaper rash to allergy reactions to foods a nursing mom might have to avoid. This book will not languish on a shelf; not only is it a great go-to helper for when a new parent wants answers immediately, but will be abundant reference material as our grandson grows up. We all considered it a great buy!

I love this book. It has everything I could ever think about looking up and it's easy to understand. I also purchased the "Baby Book" as well by the same authors / doctors. Both books give me piece of mind with my newborn.

As one who avidly devours anything about health, I would say this book is a basic Must Read, especially if you are where I was just a few short months ago. Pregnant, nervous, and paranoid, I found an article in Baby Talk magazine about Dr. Sears & decided to look into his books. I must say, this book has really made feel much less frightened of parenthood & has given me good peace of mind. I am a firm believer in Holistic & Preventative medicine, Dr. Sears gives you all the tools you need to retain a happy, healthy child! My son is two months old now & I can rest assured that when the time comes to care for him while he is sick, I will be prepared! Until then, I practice preventing him from falling ill & I am so happy I know how!

Babies never change, but the times change, and so do theories and interventions. I bought this for my daughter when she had her first baby, and I found it very helpful for me, as well, to stay up with current interventions, too. Now when I sit for my granddaughter and I question something, I can look it up first before I bring it to the attention of her mom and have a little more credibility when I talk to her if I can show her "what the book says". The book has great cross-references and doesn't go into too much detail. Just enough information is better than too much information, and this book really fine tunes what is important and when to seek more advice from the child's pediatrician. I highly recommend it!
