Ella Fitzgerald sings wonderful Christmastime music
on September 25, 2012
Ella Fitzgerald, "The First Lady of Song," was born Ella Jane Fitzgerald on April 25, 1917. Ella "was an American jazz and song vocalist. With a vocal range spanning three octaves, (Ella) was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation, and a `horn-like' improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. Fitzgerald was a notable interpreter of the Great American Songbook. Over the course of her 59-year recording career, she was the winner of 13 Grammy Awards and was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Ronald Reagan and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George H. W. Bush." Ella died on June 15, 1996.

On these tracks Ella sings just some of her best holiday music; and there's not a bad song in the lot. Her voice was truly a musical instrument; and I have always been impressed by her sense of timing, her sophisticated phrasing and her excellent diction whenever she sang. "Joy to the World" is beautiful to hear; Ella has a background chorus although she never really needed one--her talent carried her through every time. "The First Noel" charms me with its beauty; and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" gets a slightly faster tempo than I'm used to hearing but it all holds its own very well. "O Holy Night" is very pretty and I also really like Ella's superlative rendition of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing."
"It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is also very well done and as always throughout this set of songs the musical arrangement fits in perfectly with Ella's vocals. "O Come All Ye Faithful" is very beautiful and Ella performs "Away in a Manger" with great sensitivity. "We Three Kings" is a number I've heard less frequently but it's lovely nonetheless and the track set ends with Ella Fitzgerald singing "Silent Night."
Ella Fitzgerald's treatment of these wonderful holiday songs makes this a must-have for anyone who appreciates five star, quality Christmastime music. Highly recommended.
