Product Description

The relationship expert from the Ladies' Home Journal, the Wall Street Journal, and Lifetime Television shows how to prevent marriage problems before they start

There's nothing wrong with starter jobs and starter homes, but starter marriages? Relationship expert Monica Mendez Leahy is on a mission to help readers make their marriage last. Her 1,001 Questions to Ask Before You Get Married offers a reality check for couples on the marriage path, helping them realize how much they have yet to discover about their partner's nature, thought processes, lifestyle, and marital expectations.

Engaged couples learn to discuss issues deeper than "chicken or fish" and to broach subjects that are often ignored before the nuptials yet essential for the foundation of an intimate, long-lasting relationship. Posed in a variety of fun formats, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and hypotheticals, these questions include topics such as:

  • "Does your partner feel that you're too attached to your parents?"
  • "Is there such a thing as innocent flirting?"
  • "Is it OK to cheat on your taxes?"
  • And more

From the Back Cover

"An important and essential book for all couples contemplating marriage."
--Dr. Barry G. Ginsberg, Executive Director, Center of Relationship Enhancement

Using a variety of fun, interactive formats, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and hypotheticals, relationship expert Monica Mendez Leahy brings to the table these and many other important issues that will arise in every marriage--including the ones that may blindside you. 1,001 Questions to Ask Before You Get Married will help you and your partner explore your common goals and perspectives as well as celebrate your unique differences as you prepare for your life journey together.

Through the questions posed in this book, you and your betrothed will explore fundamental questions about nature, thought processes, lifestyle, and marital expectations, including:

  • Is there such a thing as innocent flirting?
  • Do you both want children?
  • How important is religion in your life?
  • Do you think couples should share the same political views?

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book and fun to read, too, May 25, 2006
By sheila (new york city) - See all my reviews
Hmmm... A person who has been successfully married for a long time and has known her husband for 10 years before tying the knot, supposedly picks up this book, realizes it doesn't offer her anything, and then gives it a negative review? Hello. Talk about a complete disconnect, and a wholly unfair review.

This is a book for people who really need to think about what kind of changes married life will bring -- it's not for people who have known each other since childhood and grew up together (see below), but as grown-ups who come with perhaps unknown sets of values, goals, expectations, families, in-laws, problems, and vision.

For people who take the institution of marriage seriously and need to want to look past the butterflies and flowers of love and engagement to what it means to be really married, warts, mothers-in-law, unemployment, child-rearing exhaustion, nursing homes, affairs, as well as the good times (LOL). The author has really thought through life's possibilities exhaustively..I'd give this to anyone who is marriage-minded. Even if you've met "the one," sometimes it's better to know up front what you're dealing with and face it head on than find out later.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why do I carry this book in my bridal salon?, July 31, 2004
By Eugenia (Eugenia's Bridal Designs) - See all my reviews
This is the only marriage preparation book I carry in my bridal boutique because of its common sense, secular and all-inclusive content. The book's questions, tips and advice can benefit any type of relationship-professional, personal as well as matrimonial. I have gotten good feedback from my customers. Many brides have told me that the questions in the book can be turned into a fun wedding shower game.

I was impressed by the book's non-threatening and non-preachy tone. It makes me feel good to know I'm offering brides something more than a beautiful wedding gown and accessories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Parents should give this book to their kids., July 31, 2004
By R. Smith (Detroit, MI) - See all my reviews
Gave this to my daughter and her fiancee to prepare them for the most important decision they'll ever make. They laughed at first, but can't stop talking about how much fun it is to ask all the questions. The sections about finances and in-laws are particularly good. I am recommending this book to all my friends who have kids of marrying age.
