I've been a happy user of The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs for several years. It is without doubt the best verb reference book on the market. It's complete and user-friendly and has helped me to improve my Spanish measurably. I love it because (1) it shows 555 fully conjugated verbs and more than 2,300 verbs cross-referenced to verbs that follow the same patterns; (2) the verb tables contain all the verb tenses and forms in a very clear, easy-to-read design; (3) the "Usage" section accompanying each verb is outstanding. I've learned how to use the conjugated verbs in a great variety of useful sentences. At the same time, I've learned other parts of speech derived from verbs and important current vocabulary; (4) the Spanish Tense Profiles are superb. I consult these excellent summaries of verb tenses and forms all the time; (5) the "Top 50 Verbs" is extraordinary. These verbs were selected for their high frequency and their use in many idiomatic expressions.

So what could be better than The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs? How about Big Red the book with an interactive CD-ROM that has hundreds of exercises? I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked into my Borders last month - there was my old friend, The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs with a CD-ROM attached to the back inside cover. At $19.95 I could easily afford it, and now keep one copy at home, the other in my office.

The format of the CD-ROM is great: first, a Diagnostic Test "How Much Do you Know Already?" with 50 multiple choice questions. I was able to test my knowledge of verb paradigms from Big Red. Nice thing is I could reset the test and take it again or bookmark my progress or jump to a specific question.

Then, the Exercises, "Practice Conjugating", has modules of interactive practice exercises. It includes hundreds of exercises to practice all the tenses and forms of Spanish verbs. I can do the exercises in groups of each tense or use the "Shuffle All" button to mix it up. I really like the types of exercises: drag and drop, select a verb form to complete a sentence, type in a verb form, etc. There's a character panel so when I type a verb form I select the accent mark or punctuation I need.

I checked my answers in Exercise Feedback on the lower right of the screen. For more information about a verb or a tense, there's a cute little open book at the upper right of the screen that you can press to see the Big Red book verb number and the Spanish Tense Profile page number.

The section "Practice the Top 50 Verbs" helps you master usage and idioms of the most important verbs in Spanish. There are exercises to identify synonyms and antonyms, translation from English to Spanish and Spanish to English, exercises to practice ser and estar, saber and conocer, preterit and imperfect, and other difficult Spanish topics.

Lastly, there's the Review Test "How Much Have You Learned?" with 100 multiple choice questions. Just like the Diagnostic Test, you can reset the test to take it again, bookmark your progress, or jump to a specific question.

Having the Big Red Spanish Verb Exercise CD-ROM is tremendous. Coordinated with the book, it expands and increases the number of sentences you can practice and produce. And it's so easy to navigate. Thanks to authors Ronni L. Gordon and David M. Stillman and McGraw-Hill for knowing what we learners need!

This is a must when you want to learn to put the proper tenses to the verb. It is very easy to read. I use the CD periodically to test how much I've retained. Taking the reviews on the CD is a very good gauge of your progress.

This book was very helpful while I was taking Spanish. There is a lot of information and it is all very useful. I would highly recommend this book to other Spanish studying students or those who are traveling to a Spanish speaking country.
