"...a welcome addition to the cell biology laboratory, assembling a wide array of techniques of value to cell biologists." -- Choice

"...an easy-to-use source of current and classic protocols, presented in a clear format." -- Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 1999

"The terms bible and encyclopedic collection are often used of scientific works aspiring to present to the scientific community all the branches of a discipline. Often these terms are misleading! Here they are paradigmatic... could not be more accurate and user-friendly... The book is not only helpful for writing papers, but invaluable for bench work... a masterpiece among scientific publications."
--EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF HISTOCHEMISTRY
"This compendium is a welcome addition to the cell biology laboratory, assembling a wide array of techniques of value to cell biologists? Contributions are by recognized experts in their fields, in some cases the originator of the technique or procedure. The four volumes are illustrated with numerous black-and-white photos of cells, instruments, and experimental set-ups, as well as black-and white drawings to assist the reader in understanding what to expect from the protocols."
--Stephen A. Adam, Ph.D., Northwestern University Medical School, for DOODY'S PUBLISHING
"The second edition of this highly praised handbook brings together more than 240 new, revised, concisely written and beautifully illustrated chapters in an attractive four-volume set, providing and easy-to-use source of current and classic protocols, presented in a clear format."
--JOURNAL OF STEROID BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY (1999)

Praise for the First Edition
"The writing is uniformly clear and precise. The editor is to be praised for a superb handbook which should be essential for any biological or biochemical department."
--J. Chayen in CELL BIOCHEMISTRY AND FUNCTION
"I look forward to the publication of the Handbook with great interest. There is clearly an enormous need for such a book, and I think the cell biology community--and my students--will be grateful."
--Tim Mitchison, University of California, San Francisco
"The aim of Cell Biology: A Laboratory Handbook is to assemble in one place the most important methods in cell biology, which have withstood the test of time to become classics. This goal has been admirably achieved in a three-volume-set edited by Julio E. Celis. This Handbook is divided into 15 sections, starting with techniques for culturing and analyzing whole cells, progressing through sections on cell fractionation, microscopy, generation of antibodies, introduction of molecules into living cells, and ending up with methods for analysis of proteins. Chapters are short and to the point. Methods are described in sufficient detail to allow the techniques to be reproduced, and are provided as easy-to-follow recipes. Importantly, the pitfalls inherent in each technique are assembled at the end of each article. The layout is admirably clear, and the quality of the illustrations is superb. The compendium will undoubtedly prove invaluable to cell biologists and to molecular biologists who wish to study the role of macromolecules in cell function. Cell Biology: A Laboratory Handbook should become the bible of established cell biological methods."
--Tony Hunter, Salk Institute, La Jolla, California
"The new Handbook is likely to become the standard laboratory manual in cell biology. It is an encyclopedic collection of methods used in cell biology laboratories and provides one stop shopping for much of the practical advice that the experimentalist needs to try new approaches to trouble shoot out ones... Short of having an expert at your side or a collection of smaller books on tissue culture, microscopy, and routine biochemical methods, this is probably the best way to introduce new methods into a cell biology laboratory? The important advantage here is that the whole range of topics is presented conveniently together in an easily accessible format."
--Thomas D. Pollard, Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine
"What a magnificent collection of books this Handbook constitutes, perfectly well adapted for the laboratory techniques and consequently for a daily use of all scientist working in life sciences."
--CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
"In summary, Cell Biology: A Laboratory Handbook is the type of an essential manual that is easily accessible to potential students as well as scientists from both research laboratories and biotechnology companies."
--Jiri Bartek, Dansk Center for Humna Genom Forskning
"The three volumes of Cell Biology: A Laboratory Handbook cover recipes for all possible techniques applicable to cell biological problems, and a few more. Now, all our experiments are bound to be a success--at least in theory."
--TRENDS IN CELL BIOLOGY
"The illustrations throughout the manual are extremely clear and high in quality. The catalog numbers for products are a major help in applying the protocols and comments and pitfalls are welcome and realistic. The list of authors and contributors is extensive and specialists throughout the world have been consulted."

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest value of this work is its comprehensiveness, February 3, 2001
By Firat CINGI (Istanbul, Maslak Turkey) - See all my reviews
Cell biology techniques have been continuously upgraded since the middle of this century, and future developments seem assured. In the 1990s, alone, new developments have led to improved separations capability, detection instrumentation, and new formulations of serum-free media. Any research institution with faculty and students engaged in cell biology will want to have the most current laboratory guidelines available, and this four-volume, peer-reviewed collection of protocols answers that need. The second edition has benefited from suggestions from practicing scientists, filling in gaps from the first edition.

Perhaps the greatest value of this work is its comprehensiveness. Laboratories and libraries can have detailed guidelines for cell culture, separation, staining, growth, apoptosis, preparation of component parts, assays, antibody production, genetic engineering, microscopy, electrophoresis, and more, all in one source. Need to know how to produce transgenic mice? It's here. How to grow viruses? Prepare nuclei? Stain mitochondria? Use fluorecence microscopy? All here.

Although there are 486 contributors to the 250 articles, uniform structure of articles builds continuity and thus ease of use. Most entries adhere to the five-part template (Introduction, Materials and Instrumentation, Procedures, Comments, and Pitfalls). This last section, "Pitfalls," seems especially valuable, as there is no substitute for experience. The main difference between articles tends to be the use of supportive graphs, photos, and tables, though in general (if such a diverse collection can be spoken of "in general") visuals are at a minimum.
