DHTML & JavaScript offers plenty of instruction on using DHTML features as implemented in Netscape's Navigator 4+ browsers. This book contains a wealth of information about style sheets and other elements of Dynamic HTML; however, readers should be forewarned that there is no mention of Microsoft Internet Explorer compatibility whatsoever.

The title features dual coverage of the cascading style sheets syntax and JavaScript syntax implementations of DHTML. It delves deeply into the added features of JavaScript 1.2 and covers the changes presented with JavaScript 1.3. The first part of the book focuses on style and layer implementation, while the subsequent parts go into the aforementioned JavaScript dialects. The material is presented with text that's easy to understand; however, the book's formatting is a bit distracting. The author uses unusually prominent headings and excessively underlines text.

Loads of code samples illustrate all of the concepts, and charts summarize the language syntax, properties, and events. The accompanying CD-ROM provides the book's content in HTML and Adobe Acrobat formats as well as supplemental documents such as Netscape guides. Although this book's presentation is rather unconventional, its excellent code examples and detailed index make it great as an everyday how-to reference. --Stephen W. Plain

Gilorien is a digital artist so this is not your normal computer manual. While the tech stuff is all correct, the book's perspective is definitely "artistic," meaning cool comes before usability and often readability. This is not a book for novices; readers should have already mastered cascading style. A must for patrons interested in creating very strange, dynamic, animated images that download quckly without plugs-in. For larger collections.

I was very disappointed that this book only covered DHTML (JavaScript and CSS) that worked with Netscape. I was hoping for something that would work in both NS and IE. The one good thing about the book is the author does tell you about Netscape bugs that force you to change the syntax of your JavaScript.

This book teaches Netscape only solutions. What good is that when more than half the browsers out there are not Netscape? Books should offer code that is cross-browser or atleast degrades well. The code in this book caused run-time error after run-time error in Internet Explorer. If you are a big Netscape fan, it does contain tons of code for you. I do not recommend this book if you are a fellow webmaster serving any windows users.

This book does exactly what it says it will do and it's a great resource for anyone who's doing website design. It provides detailed information that is useful for anyone from a beginner to an expert in website design. If you want to learn about cascading style sheets in both CSS and JavaScript, then this is the book for you. It also covers all of the new capabilites of version 1.2 and 1.3 of JavaScript and integrates it into DHTML. It has lots of working examples which illustrate specific concepts that are easy to understand. It also has a substantial number of very practical real-world application examples and the most complex examples are thoroughly explained. I highly reccommend this book to anyone designing web pages, even if you mostly use straight HTML. The HTML primer is a great reference and there are lots of reference sheets from the book that are on the CD-ROM that you can easily print out as a handy memory-jog.

It seems to me that the previous reviewer gave an unwarranted rating which was based on her initial misperception of the purpose of the book. The "Review" information at the site, which was taken from the Back Cover of the book, clearly states that the book was Navigator-oriented.

Just get the book: you'll learn a lot and be glad you did.
