This is a horrible book to read to small children unless you are Morticia Addsms. I read it to mine when she throws bedtime tantrums. This book is an abcedaria of children dying in rhyme. It has ink drawings of the children right before they die, so it's not quite as gruesome as it could be.

Perusing titles for my unborn son, I stumbled across this eclectic title from Edward Gorey. Previously I had not been exposed to Gorey's literary genius (I know, shame on me) but ordered the book simply because it intrigued me. When building a library for your children, and populating it with the likes of Where The Wild Things Are and Green Eggs And Ham and Goodnight Moon and so on... How can you resist an alphabet book that kills off 27 children? The illustrations are fantastic in the vein of Charles Addams. The story is short and sweet and delivered with hilarity (though a bit ghastly, of course). Some might think it twisted, but what good children's stories aren't? Marry Poppins where the lady breaks off her fingers and eats them? Alice In Wonderland, where do I start? James and The Giant Peach? The Hobbit? Even The Cat In The Hat reeks of home invasion, right? I cant wait to read The Gashlycrumb Tinies to my son. A is for Amy who fell down the stairs, B is for Basil, assaulted by bears...

Dig it!

I can't describe how fun it was to hear the incredulous giggles from my 7-9 y/o nephews as I read this book while showing them the morbid illustrations a couple days before Halloween.

The pre-Halloween reading of The Gashlycrumb Tinies may become a tradition.

This book is exactly what I thought it would be and more. Each page is filled with darkly humorous lines about the characters from A-Z.

A really fun book, recommended by a friend. As a school counselor (now a counselor educator) I'm always looking for books that I can use in session or in classroom. This one is just a fun addition to my library. It's perfect for kids with a morbid sense of humor.
