Covering the history of the US Navy in a bit over 100 pages is rather an audacious undertaking, but Symonds pulls it off. Obviously some things get scant mention, but this is q very good book. It would be a good starting point for putting chunks of naval history into context, or for a general review. There are a few maps and several illustrations.

I think that naval history buffs tend to have most interest in the world wars, so for many readers early sections might be informative. The origins of the Navy in the Revolution are covered, as is the development of the Navy through the War of 1812. This includes among other things, operations against the Barbary pirates (in North Africa) and the Quasi War with France. The first battle described is a defeat on Lake Champlain, where the operation was led by one colonel Benedict Arnold. The chapter covering 1820 to 1850, "The Constabulary Navy" is unexpectedly interesting--dealing with Caribbean pirates, the illegal slave trade and landing more than 10,000 troops on the Mexican coast in the campaign that ultimately won that war. The Civil War section is brief but comprehensive (on both sides). The section describing the Navy from the Civil War to the Spanish War is perhaps duller than the other sections, but describes why US ships even with steam engines retained sails--no bases to coal from; the world wide bases started only in the 1890s with the acquisition of Guam, Hawaii, the Philippines, Guantanamo and other places.

The author does list a number of American interventions, without being judgmental (save in one instance) but US operations included landing troops and conducting warlike operations in Sumatra, Korea and a good many other places, surprisingly long ago.

When Symonds titled this book with the word "concise", he really meant it. Calling it a book is really not accurate; it's more like a booklet. It's not too bad up to WW2, when it starts becoming more of an essay of everything he admires and loves about the modern US Navy. In the first half of the book he is a historian and states facts, and in the second half he describes the US Navy in such glowing and awesome terms that it was hard to read it to the finish. Since the 'book' is so short I did make it to the end. I think that for what you get it is very over-priced. I liked his other books and should have looked at this one more carefully before I bought it.
