Set in the England of the Middle Ages, this is the true story of a couple in love who refused to be parted by political forces and differences in rank.

Joan, Countess of Kent, the niece of King Edward III of England, was very unusual for her era. Not only was she strikingly beautiful, but she entered a clandestine marriage with Sir Thomas Holland, a man much older and way below her in rank, and struggled for many years to free herself of a forced second marriage to another nobleman, so she could return to Sir Thomas. whom she loved deeply.

This novel depicts her prolonged emotional, political and legal struggles with both her second husband and with her cousin, the heir to the throne, Edward, the Black Prince, neither of whom wanted her to return to Sir Thomas, because both of them wanted her.

The reader travels with Joan and Tom to sea journeys, battle fields, military camps, palaces, churches and manor houses. The lovers are separated for long periods of time, separations followed by passionate reunions. They are always searching for each other.

The details of medieval life are presented unobtrusively, but clearly. The dialogue is given in modern English with just a few medieval English words, so that a reader from our era can follow what is going on easily. The characters think and act like medieval people, but their motivations and thought processes are displayed in ways that make them easy to understand.

I have read it quickly, and will likely reread it to pick up details I missed the first time.

This was my first novel by Emma Campion. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'll pick up another in the future. I was prepared to like this novel from the moment I read the synopsis and I anxiously awaited its release date. There have not been many novels written about Joan, the Fair Maid of Kent, and most only have her as a secondary character instead of the lead. An interesting woman who lived through a chaotic period in English history, I thought the novel's subject was a good one, and thought it would take quite a bit to make me dislike this book. Unfortunately that is how it ended for me.

Quite a bit is known of Joan's life, but even so that's not a great deal. This, however, leaves ample space for the author to create a strong, personal portrayal of how the historical figures might have lived according to their own imagination, and to have some fun creating personalities for fictional characters and those historical personages of whom we know little to nothing about in the hopes of drawing reasonable conclusions to questions that continue to plague us and events that continue to intrigue us in the 21st century. In this book Ms. Campion's author's note brings up a question that historians and even I myself have wondered: Why was Joan of Kent buried next to Thomas Holland instead of Edward, Prince of Wales (also known as the Black Prince)? This question is the platform on which the author builds her story. Which one of her husbands was her "prince"?

The novel begins in 1338. Joan, along with her mother Margaret, Countess of Kent, and her brother John are wards of King Edward III, his wife Phillipa of Hainault, and the Dowager Queen Isabella. Joan's father Edmund, Earl of Kent, was a younger half-brother of the now deposed and murdered Edward II.

My Review:

I was invited to join Blogging for Books, where I get to choose a book in exchange for an honest review. I decided to choose a book that I would not normally choose, therefore I selected an adult Historical Fiction book. Historical fiction is a genre that I really enjoy and unfortunately do not read as often as I would like. But the synopsis of this story really intrigued me. I had not read much about this time period and even though I had heard of Joan of Kent, I had never really known her story.

I was immediately drawn into the time period and to the overall story. If you are a fan of the love, politics, and betrayal behind royal courts then this is a story for you. I was immediately drawn into Joan's story and Joan as our leading lady. First off let me just start off stating that Joan is such a brave woman. She loses her father as a child, still fights to redeem his memory. She is cast from residence to the next by the whims of her cousin the King and his wife and then is used as a chess piece to try to bring more power to her cousin. She must fight off a marriage to an notorious man and fight for love all at the age of 12! But regardless of the obstacles thrown in her way she stays true to herself and does not go down fighting. And she stays true to her self and will not let any man, Kind or Prince use her to their advantage. She is a force to reckon with and it is no wonder that her story is still told and discussed hundreds of years later.

I really enjoyed this story and loved reading the authors note in the end of how and why she decided to write this story. If you a fan of historical fiction then this is a book to consider!

I had a hunch that I would like this book when I received it, but one never knows does one! Emma Campion is a pen name for Candace Robb who has a host of earlier historical novels to her credit. As Emma Campion she also penned the excellent, to my mind, noteworthy, novel "The King's Mistress" which is a novel based on the story of Alice Perrers, mistress to King Edward III.

This is the story of Joan of Kent who was the niece of King Edward III. Joan, who was considered quite a beauty in the middle ages, fell in love for all the right reasons with Sir Thomas Holland. He was, unfortunately, much older than she , and he was also below her in rank. This match was challenged and she was forced into a second, loveless marriage to another nobleman who was chosen by the men in her life who used her as a political tool. Her second husband and her cousin, The Black Prince, all refused to allow her to return to Sir Thomas, who was, in reality, her legal husband.

This book covers the prolonged, political battle that is waged in order to support her claim that her marriage to Sir Thomas should be legally upheld. The struggles that Joan and Sir Thomas had in maintaining their love throughout their struggle is well depicted and the characters in this book are well developed. The dialogue flows smoothly between characters and scenes. The political forces of the time are highlighted and the daily life in medieval times is well presented and is quite historically correct.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and had to read it straight through. I look forward to more books under this pen name, and I can recommend this book to all lovers of historical fiction - or fiction in general!
