The Los Angeles Getty Museum purchased in 1983 for $10 million ($24 million in 2015) an extremely rare kouros, an ancient Greek statue. There are only about 200 kouroi in existence, and those are missing limbs and other body parts. (Picture the armless Venus de Milo.) The Getty spent tons of money having the nude male in perfect condition appraised by "experts" who wanted to believe that this was the only intact kouros in existence.

The Getty invited other art experts to view the rare find before the purchase was finalized. All of the unpaid experts had "an instinctive sense that something was amiss." It looked "fresh" and the fingernails seemed as though the model had a recent manicure. It was too perfect to be true.

Highly paid investment experts purchased Internet stocks with no price/earnings ratios in early 2000 for $800 a share, just before the bubble burst. Wall Street banks in 2005-2008 purchased mortgage backed securities, earning billions of dollars. Until the housing market bubble burst. After all, how can a $400,000 mortgaged house valued at half a million dollars be a bad investment. Those investment experts didn't read BLINK. Something was amiss.

I read Blink shortly after the housing market sank into quicksand, and was impressed with Malcolm Gladwell's extraordinary insight. Many times I've recalled lessons learned from reading this book. A true, life-threatening incident of trusting instincts inspired me to purchase BLINK, and a second copy for a friend.

There's a pine bark mulch bed between the patio and lake.

Great book, but it left lots of unanswered questions. It talks about thinking without thinking, but really doesn't talk about how to develop these skills, which would be REALLY useful. Lots of fun stories in it to illustrate points.

a wonderful book by my favorite author, that perfectly describes how the human brain functions and operates without us even being in control

I love the way Gladwell's mind works. He digs into the stuff one might casually consider and reveals how our own minds work when picking up subtleties of first impressions of appearances, body language, etc.

Gladwell definitely gives you a different look at life.....a good read....probably of more "value" if all young people read it :)

Though all the case study supports the point, too many needless details are present. As such, the reader is forced to endure (as is often the case in many texts) excessively redundant concepts. The book could have been 60% shorter and still (perhaps more effectively) conveyed all the essential elements. The irony is that a key foundation of Blink is the ability to discern `truth` quickly and often without an overabundance of information. Mr Gladwell would have done well to heed that notion in his writing about this particular subject.

All that said, Blink provides key (important) insights/perspectives related to analysis and decision-making. In the end it all comes down to judgment whose foundation is often rooted in having a considerable background, training, and experience related to the matter at hand. But often instincts born from all of that may negate the need for extensive data about a thing at a particular moment. Vital is when do we follow our gut and when should we research thoroughly and to what degree?

The power of Intuition. Easy reading and informative. When your intuition might be misled and how it might occur.
Might even awaken you to some of your blind sides.

Another informative book on the subject is
Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman

That little voice in the back of your mind...ever wonder why it's there & where it came from? Instant analysis or intuition? Malcolm Gladwell helps explain those moments.
