I did not look closely at the description of this book before acquiring it. I mistakenly thought it was going to be about the Core Frameworks iOS has to offer. I thought that because I own the previous version of the author's book The iOS 5 Developer's Cookbook: Core Concepts and Essential Recipes for iOS Programmers.

It turns out the lineup is just being restructured and the iOS 5 Developer's Cookbook: Core Concepts and Essential Recipes for iOS Programmers is being broken into two volumes and a tutorial book. This is the first of a 2 volume cookbook set. I think the more appropriate and less confusing title should have been used like The iOS 6 Essentials Developer's Cookbook, or The iOS 6 Fundamentals Developer's Cookbook.

Although it was not what I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and found the all the content valuable.

Like her previous edition, this book is much more than just a cookbook with a bunch of recipes in it. I have used plenty of cookbooks and they are never readable from cover to cover. I usually just familiarize myself with the recipes that are available, read the ones interesting to me at the time, and throw them on the shelf until I need them.

This one is both a great cover to cover read as well as a great reference. The author does a great job of mixing a traditional book with a recipe book. Each chapters contain both background information and recipes. I have listed the chapters below.

1. Gestures and Touches
2. Building and Using Controls
3. Alerting the User
4. Assembling Views and Animations
5. View Constraints
6. Text Entry
7. Working with View Controllers
8. Common Controllers
9. Accessibility
10. Creating and Managing Table Views
11. Collection Views
12.

I've read quite a lot of iOS Developer books, which try to guide you step by step (showing a lot of screen-dumps) in what to do or what you should expect to see on your screen. If you don't have the specific iOS / Xcode version discussed in the book, you can waste a lot of time or need to Google very often to determine which wizard settings you need to select. This distracts you quite a lot from the real work: coding!

For this, the concept of the Cookbook series has been invented IMHO. As promised the book offers a number of interesting "cut-and-paste conveniences" which can be modified and re-used at will. Just as in cooking your own meal, the ingredients can be played and combined with to make your 5-star Michelin / AppStore rated meal / app. In my opinion all chapters in this book cover all necessary topics which may occur in any app you've in mind.

I like the "roadmap to becoming an iOS developer" figure which shows clearly how to start reading to become a developer. The problem with Apple's Documentation / Guidelines is that its too much, lacks a good search utility and it is not always clear where to start.

A good companion to this Cookbook would be a guide (or cheat-sheet) explaining the tools needed which are best suited in making your app-graphics / multimedia, since preparing and uploading your app to the AppStore requires quite a lot of graphics tool wizardry. I'll definitely study the other companion Cookbooks and can recommend this book to any (wannabe) iOS developer!

The book is totally useful to the experienced iOS develoepr. I hate it when so many titles spend half the book telling you what you already know (how to program, how to write Objective-C, how to publish your app.) This one doesn't waste my time with all that. If you are looking for a book that tells you how to to the tricky stuff easily and quickly, this is one you need in your library.

I got this book after finishing Steve Kochan's Objective C book hoping to get straight into ios. Unfortunately, Erica Sadun's book doesn't provide any information about Interface Builder (its all coding) so I was lost in the early stages. I had to get Nick Smiths IOS Primer e-Book to get me started and after playing around with this and the IB I was on my way. Erica Saduns book is not for complete IOS beginners but once you get past that stage its great. So, I would certainly recommend this book but if you are a newbie to IOS programming, get Nick's book too which is only a few dollars in eBook format and you will have far less trouble getting started.

Yes, on the eve of the release of iOS 7, I get involved with a cookbook for iOS 6. That is the story of my life. Oh well. From what I can see, however, the back end code is going to be little different, so I do not foresee this being a huge problem going forward, especially since I have yet to release an actual iOS application. I don't get that much vacation from my real job.

Anyway, the writing is superb, and the code examples are very clear, concise, and explained well. Even if one is not having any specific problems generating iOS code, this author is a great teacher and can explain things in an understandable manner.

So, why not 5 stars? My only reason is that finding what you need in here is tough. The index is not what I could call complete, and the division of the chapters is not what I was expecting.
