The Fecund Fruition of Historical Research

I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you are interested in Machiavelli this is an excellent starting point. The book is the result of great erudition and research; digging through governmental discussions among leading citizens, Gilbert patches together the worldview from which Machiavelli and Guicciardini sprang. Only by starting here can we know what is original in Machiavelli and what is derivative, how he challenged the popular views and how he altered them. The book is written in crisp, flowing prose. It reads almost like a historical novel, with Florence as the main character, and, because Gilbert is such a skilled historian, the story he tells weaves together many fascinating aspects of life--politics, religion, economy.
