If you have any interest whatsoever in physics or Einstein, you should stop reading this review and buy this book immediately.

I learned so much from reading this book, that I ended up buying more books on physics, as well as Richard Feynman's lectures (Six Easy Pieces) and then even starting taking online physics courses.

From reading this book, I discovered that I have a true affinity for physics and science that I never even realized. Michio Kaku writes this book with the same easy style as he's written his other books. He dumbs it down for you, but he never talks down to you. The information is delivered in a manner where the reader can actually absorb what's being said. Otherwise, you'd have a bunch of mumbo-jumbo about quanta, atoms and neutrons that would bore you tears by the time you reached the third page. This book is written like an really smart, laid-back guy is sitting across from you at a coffee shop just chatting away to you about what he knows of Einstein and physics. This no text book!

Mr. Kaku doesn't bombard you with the terminology. Instead, when he introduces the terminology, theories or explanations to you he first explains the theory and then gives you a real-world comparison, enabling the reader to actually envision what's being explained. The explanation of the bending of space and time in a text book would warp some brain cells, right? Instant migraine. Not here! Mr. Kaku delivers the basic premise in such a manner with a real-world explanation, enabling the reader to not only "get it," but also to encourage and provoke the reader to want to know more.

A history of Einstein and how he got his ideas through very simple "thought experiments".

Everything is explained in layman's terms, no physics background needed to understand what is written.

This book, by Dr. Michio Kaku, deals with three main themes that are intertwined together:

(1)The life of Dr. Albert Einstein (March 1879 to April 1955)
(2)The all-important science of Einstein
(3)The important scientific contributions of others and some insight into their lives.

This slim book contains three parts each made up of three surprisingly easy-to-read chapters. Below I will give the title of each chapter (not necessarily the same as the book's) and what I consider to be the highlights of each chapter. For chapter nine, I will provide a overview only.

Part I:

(1) Physics before Einstein

The scientific discoveries of Isaac Newton and James Clerk Maxwell.

(2) The Early Years of Einstein

Einstein in school; Einstein and religion; Einstein's introduction to science, mathematics, and philosophy; his thinking; his loves; Einstein and authority; Einstein begins working for a living; his marriage.

(3) Special Relativity and the "Miracle Year of 1905"

Einstein's first thought picture; two simple principles by Einstein that "mark the most profound insights into the nature of the universe since Newton's work;" his famous equation; Einstein explains the photoelectric effect; he gives the first experimental proof of the existence of atoms; Einstein receives his Ph.D.: Einstein's guiding principle in physics; Experimental evidence confirms some of Einstein's ideas; Einstein becomes a professor of physics; the famous "twin paradox;" his marriage begins to "unravel;" Einstein meets his second love.

I do not normally enjoy biographies, but this book filled a lot of blanks I had about Einstein. An example of those questions is why Einstein did not have a direct role in the development of the atomic bomb. At the same time it was a historic tour through scientific advances in physics beginning with special relativity and continuing through M theory. The scientific level is good for a nonscientist such as me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book (hey, it's by Michio Kaku), but I must admit, not being a physicist (physician?) I sometimes got lost in the terminology. Professor Kaku did his best, I'm sure, to define an unfamiliar term the first time it was used, but it was easy to lose track after awhile. That being said, the style and subject matter were such that it was also easy to get pleasantly lost in the narrative of Einstein's rich life and and the meanings and consequences (dare I say "fallout") of his theories.

As always, Professor Kaku has presented a cogent and (relatively) easy to understand description of some of the most profound observations of the laws of our universe and of their discoverer.
