This volume is roughly a companion to Philip Matyszak's "Legionary". Prestwich goes guides the reader through the medieval European knight's world of training, beliefs, customs, equipment and general rules of engagement. What sets it apart from Matyszak is the overall tone: where Legionary was told in a somewhat light tone, suggesting an old soldier talking to a a younger realative or a recently arrived newbie, Prestwick's tone is more of the academic educator who is providing classroom theory and history to a student knight in the period 1300-1415. Also, where Matyszak addresses the legions as an organization, Prestwick guides the reader by comparison to and contrast with three legends of the period, de Charny, Hawkwood, and Boucicaut. Another excellent one-volume reference to its period, even if it hasn't quite the scope or humor of Legionary. Highly recommended for the casual reader and researcher alike.

This book is a companion to Philip Matyszak's Legionary book. This book written by Michael Prestwich goes into the world of medieval knight of Europe. The book is well written, well research with a lot of information written in a very easy to read and digest. The book goes step by step into taking you into the world of knights, their habits, gears and rules of engagement. However, the book basically centered around the 14th century so one of the greatest knights in medieval history, William Marshall isn't even mentioned here. But this book proves to be a great introduction to the world of medieval knights.

I have read about knights, chivalry and the Middle Ages for decades, but I cannot remember reading a book on the subject with as much enjoyment and pleasure as I got from reading this. It's a charming and entertaining work! Written in supposedly the middle of the 15th C. (he doesn't comment on the English War of the Roses - so it precedes that but is written apparently after Agincourt), it's a practical "how to" for would be knights, describing the training, the orders, battles, tournaments, campaigning, crusades, ransoms and booty - the whole thing. In fact, I frequently found myself wishing that I could take part in goal to become a knight, such is the subtle charm of this little book.

I especially liked Prestwich's dry wit and the occasional little knowing nods, like claiming that the Swiss aren't interested in money and likely never will be, or that the English Order of the Garter is a rather silly order; don't attempt to join it because it probably won't be around for long. Or telling his readers to avoid the medical help of the medieval proctologist who wrote a medical treatise entitled "De Fistula in Anu."

There's also a section on Ladies and Damsels that has more of Prestwich's gentle humor on display throughout the book. In summary, the writer suggests finding a sensible damsel to adore, who won't hold you to ridiculous (and dangerous) oaths, like going into battle wearing an eyepatch over one eye. Other advice: "Have as little to do with peasants as possible," "Do not crusade against Mamluks or Turks" (they fight too well) and "Get knighted on the battlefield: it's much simpler that way."

But this isn't a comedy book - it had loads of fascinating facts and anecdotes from the lives of well-known knights.

interesting descriptions of how medieval knights were recruited from noble families but I found writing style was quite dry and not as much technical details or armour, weapons and tactics as others in this series.
For example:
From reading elsewhere armour seemed to evolve from mail to plate and the quality of the metal started becoming steel instead of just iron - how and what drove these advancements?
How did knights attack, did they plan to break up enemy formations and then tackle with sword and mace? Ssome discussion of the crossbow and longbow giving peasants the ability to knock down a knight must have been a rude shock!
How did command and control work? was there bugles or standards? I did find any discussion on this.
compared to others in the series I found this volume a bit dry in the writing style and focussed more on the recuritment, administration and guilds/leagues of the knights rather than their employment in battles where their combat power and mobility could allow shock actions that broke the opposing army.

Very well written for those (like me) with a casual interest in the life and times. A scholar would be disappointed, although I could see a place for it in a lower division/junior college curriculum. I enjoyed the time spent reading it.

Very interesting and entertaining way of writing a text book. I am an adult and found it very entertaining and plan to pass it on to my nephew. Not a lot of detailed analysis, but a very concise overview of what it meant to be various forms of Knight or Man-at-Arms in the 14th century.
