Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Award-winning Poet of the Year, Margaret Havill "Mandi" Reid, is represented by a rich assortment of verse in "Love & City Dreaming". While the focus remains firmly on her love poetry and urban verses, this anthology also includes limericks and other humorous offerings, religious and political themes, philosophic conundrums and even some children's verse. In fact, unlike her previous collection, "Song of the Wayward Wind", care has been taken on this occasion to make all the contents of "Love & City Dreaming", including Mandi's own illustrations, suitable for all readers.

When the award-winning poet and artist, Margaret Havill Reid, died on July 27, 2004, she left behind over 1,200 unpublished verses. Many of the poems she selected for her first anthology, SONG OF THE WAYWARD WIND and Other Poems, had previously been published. I assumed that because they had won so many awards, they represented her best work. I was wrong. Just because a poem wins a prize does not necessarily make it superior to the writer's other compositions. Dare I say it, but I am not overfond of "Song of the Wayward Wind", despite its Poem-of-the-Year Award. Among Margaret's papers, I discovered several earlier versions which I much prefer. I have published one of these, "Requiem for a Ghost Town, Kumara, Westland", in the present anthology.

I also discovered that Margaret had actually planned a second anthology herself. The featured poem (and title of the book) was to be "Face of the City". Once again, I found there were at least five or six earlier versions of the proposed title poem. And once again, it was one of the earlier drafts that I much preferred and have published in this book.

All told, this 120-page anthology contains 80 of Margaret's best poems, ranging over a wide area of genre and subject matter. I like the humorous poems (anyone who reads it will never forget the magnificent "Muzzacoffalox" or the dazzling "Wiz of Wizzinzee") and the romantic verses best, but there are poems here to suit every taste. And, unlike SONG OF THE WAYWARD WIND and Other Poems there are no poems or illustrations here that even the most fastidious parent would find off-key. In fact, I've included a delightful sample of verse aimed at children, "Mida, the Spider", which adults will enjoy with equal pleasure.
