Mr. Schama's writing is often delightful and the essays are very interesting, though I tend to pay less attention when he discusses abstract art. I saw several of the shows he reviews in the book when I lived in New York and found his contributions, historical and otherwise, valuable and insightful. As far as the kindle version is concerned, the links to images often do not work at all or, when they do work, jump annoyingly from one to another, forth and back. They are not very good when they do work, but I would still have appreciated seeing them without a hassle. Also, they do not enlarge as kindle images often do. The lack of a clean sweep of 5 stars is only due to the kindle image problem.

Exactly what I had hoped for. Better than a university art history course. Excellent writing, good coverage, and I can find whatever paintings I want to see on the internet.

Format: Hardcover
As a reader who enjoyed Schama's impossibly learned and digressive _Landscape and Memory_ but was less thrilled by the History of Britain series (especially the BBC TV versions where the good professor drifted towards the manner of the stereotypical Oxbridge Don and periodically forgot the marvellous examples of James Burke, David Attenborough and Michael Wood), I'm delighted to see this collection of essays in print. The subjects range from Dutch art to British art to contemporary artists to the crafts and all the essays exemplify Schama's historically informed and deeply engaged and engaging style of writing. The other critics who come to mind when reading this collection of essays are Ruskin and Arthur Danto (in his columns for the _Nation_). Readers of the New Yorker will recognize the wonderful pieces on Hogarth (Mad Cows and Englishmen) and the Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh but the real masterpieces in this collection (for this reader) are the pieces on Frederic Brenner (Looking Jewish), Anselm Kiefer and 1492 (the Columbus Exhibition 1991).
