Product Description

Frustrated by political obstacles to their goals of economic world domination, a group of unscrupulous American industrial tycoons secretly finance a new political party, the American Freedom Party (AFP). They plan to use the AFP to subvert the Constitution and further their monopolistic national and global agendas.

What they fail to realize is that John Gerard, their charismatic presidential candidate, plans to double-cross them and, like Hitler, become a dictator. These conspiratorial financiers create international economic and political crises that leave the Republican and Democratic parties hopelessly divided and ineffectual. With behind-the-scenes manipulations, AFP enables their candidate to resolve these crises and gain the support of the frightened citizens of the United States.

Only two people can thwart these plots: Dr. Ritter, a psychologist who once treated the future presidential candidate, and Solomon Weissman, a muckraking journalist. During hypnosis sessions, the psychopathic Gerard unknowingly reveals his plans to Dr. Ritter. Meanwhile, Weissman penetrates the financiers' New Millennium Consortium and learns of their plans.

In his climb to power, Gerard arranges for the disappearance of his opponents and those familiar with his past. But the one adversary he doesn't anticipate is the only man who knows the secret behind the hobgoblin nightmares that haunt both Dr. Ritter and himself.

Paranoia and politics intertwine in this perceptive...thriller. At the center of the narrative are Martin Ritter, a hot-shot psychology student plagued by hidden insecurities, and his patient John Gerard, who rants under hypnosis about his plan to impose a fascist regime on America. Dr. Jaffe, a psychology professor, draws a sharply observed, often hilarious portrait of clinical psychology, as Martin and his colleagues jockey for status, subtly manipulate patients and wrestle with their own issues. The story is, at one level, a deftly fictionalized debate between psychoanalysis and cognitive therapy. Martin is an unusual and appealing hero for a political thriller. Outwardly deploying the therapist's earnest, rationalistic aplomb, inwardly bubbling with neurotic self-consciousness, he seems like Woody Allen stuck in a remake of The Manchurian Candidate.

5.0 out of 5 stars WELL CRAFTED PAGE TURNER, June 17, 2006
By ROCKON "BARB" (Boynton Beach, Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This well-crafted page-turner is sure to touch a nerve in every reader.

"Think It Can't Happen Here" is one of many memorable chapters in this fascinating novel of terrorism and deception, perfectly capturing the world we now live in. HOBGOBLINS takes us into the mind of Marty who is working undercover to expose Garard (a Hitler-like personality determined to take over the world), while at the same time facing his own "hobgoblins."

If you enjoy political intrigue and psychological drama, HOBGOBLINS will keep you on the edge of your seat with a message of utmost importance and a completely surprising ending. I highly recommend this title to anyone who cares about our collective future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced thriller, January 12, 2007
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (1/07)

Dr. Marty Ritter is struggling to finish up the requirements for his PhD in Psychology. He not only has to deal with the stress of the doctorate program and the politics among the faculty, he also has to deal with his own demons from his past. Marty has a father in a mental institution. His mother died, most likely as a result of cancer from pollution from a plant in Marty's home town. Unable to deal with the loss of his wife and the politics of the small town, his father succumbs to alcoholism and mental illness. Marty's brother dies when he is young and he knows that somehow his father is responsible for his death. Initially, Marty tries to avoid contact with him while he is institutionalized. This does not allow him to confront his own demons from his past. Marty is terribly afraid of hobgoblins. His father used to terrify him with stories about them.

While Marty is doing his internship, he gets a patient who discloses plans to become a dictator of the United States while under the guise of running for president under the American Freedom Party. Marty takes his disclosures very seriously, however, no one else does. He secretly tapes some meetings. These tapes end up being involved in the loss of life when people with the American Freedom Party try to destroy the candidates past. People who were aware of the candidate's treatment for mental illness either disappear or are murdered. Marty's life becomes endangered and so does that of one his patient's who he had enlisted to help him gather proof of the candidate's plans.

Interestingly enough, this candidate also has an irrational fear of hobgoblins. Marty's investigation into his own past leads him down a path where he finds the connection. As he confronts the demons from his past, he also is able to develop a relationship with his father. Seeing what his father went through gives Marty an understanding of the similarities of what he is trying to accomplish.

"Hobgoblins" is a great, faced-paced story. The author, Dr. Jacob Jaffe, extensively draws on his experience as a psychologist and as a former professor to write a realistic thriller. He delves into history and compares the American Freedom Party to Hitler's party. The interactions and relationships between the characters, especially with Marty and his personal relationships are very well developed and add richness to the story. I highly recommend this novel.
