Product Description
Soft corals and sea fans are amazingly beautiful and abundant inhabitants of the World's coral reefs. This richly illustrated field and laboratory guide opens the door to the understanding and idenfication of over 90 genera known from the warm shallow waters of the Central and Western Pacific, the Indian Ocean, and the Red Sea. It contains over 700 photographs of entire animals, plus close-ups showing their characteristic features, as well as detailed drawings of the skeletal elements, clear descriptions of distinctive features, habitat, abundance and World distribution. This book should be of equal value to professional scientists, students, divers, aquarium owners and nature enthusiasts.

About the Author
KATHARINA FABRICIUS is a marine biologist who has studied the ecology of coral reefs since 1988 and currently holds a position as a Research Scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. She received her PhD from the University of Munich for research on nutrition and community regulation in tropical soft corals in 1995. She has conducted over 1500 taxonomic inventories of octocorals as part of community surveys on the Great Barrier Reef, the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the Red Sea, and the Florida Keys.

PHILIP ALDERSLADE began working on the identification of octocorals nearly 30 years ago when he was a graduate research assistant in the Zoology Department at the University of Queensland. He continued to specialize in this field while working for the Roche Research Institute of Marine Phamacology in Sydney during the 1970s and as the Curator of Coelenterates at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin; a post he has held since 1981. His research has gained him an MSc and a PhD from James Cook University. He is considered a world authority in octocoral taxonomy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A superb and reliable reference!, November 3, 2007
For all the years that I have been an Amazon shopper and avid reader/book collector, I have scarcely made the time to review any works. This is, in fact, only my second review to date! I must say that I have owned this book for several years now and - from an aquarium hobbyist/reef photographer & aquatic science mentor perspective - I refer to this book among the most frequently indexed in my collection. It is concise and reliable and written by our current industry authorities. I have the highest regard for the effort and strongly encourage fellow reef admirers to include this reference in their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on soft corals!, March 19, 2006
By Douglas Fenner (American Samoa) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This handy size book is a gorgeous field guide. It is the only guide for soft corals, and it is definitive, being authored by the two leading authorities on soft corals. All the Indo-Pacific genera that are in shallow water are included, with many gorgeous photos, and lots of useful information. This is the state of the art for soft corals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Great general guide/reference for neglected taxa!, February 4, 2004
By R.P. (Novi, MI United States) - See all my reviews
Slick, beautiful, and much needed. Though not to the octocorals what Corals of the World was to the Scleractinia, still a great little book.
