About the Author
KATHARINA FABRICIUS is a marine biologist who has studied the ecology of coral reefs since 1988 and currently holds a position as a Research Scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. She received her PhD from the University of Munich for research on nutrition and community regulation in tropical soft corals in 1995. She has conducted over 1500 taxonomic inventories of octocorals as part of community surveys on the Great Barrier Reef, the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the Red Sea, and the Florida Keys.
PHILIP ALDERSLADE began working on the identification of octocorals nearly 30 years ago when he was a graduate research assistant in the Zoology Department at the University of Queensland. He continued to specialize in this field while working for the Roche Research Institute of Marine Phamacology in Sydney during the 1970s and as the Curator of Coelenterates at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin; a post he has held since 1981. His research has gained him an MSc and a PhD from James Cook University. He is considered a world authority in octocoral taxonomy.
