Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-With these six self-contained stories, Wells expands on Timothy Goes to School (Dutton, 1992). Each tale features a different animal character in a recognizable kindergarten situation. There are bullies; teasing; a birthday party; an onstage show; and classroom units on bugs, birds, measuring, and science-fair projects. These experiences ring true, except, perhaps, for the availability of a chemistry lab (usually associated with much older students) adjacent to the kindergarten classroom. Ultimately, these stories can reassure young children about school and help them negotiate situations that they may encounter. The text is aided by the warm, bright illustrations of softly textured, rounded furry creatures and homey backgrounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars LEARNING AND LAUGHTER ABOUND, July 23, 2002
Youngsters will enjoy, identify with and learn from these six apropos and funny stories by award winning author Rosemary Wells. With the same friendly characters found in "Timothy Goes To School" the author tells tales that teach young ones how to share, how to take turns, how to work together, and how to persist in achieving goals.

Teachers are depicted as fair mentors who help, encourage and, yes, are firm when it's necessary.

In "Fritz Tries Again" it is Science Fair time and Fritz is determined to make a toilet paper roll Superconducting Super Collider. His classmates don't think this is possible and opt for more realistic projects such as collecting seashells or different mosses. Does Fritz surprise them all, including himself?

During Bird Week Charles, who is not very big and rather shy, chooses to be a bald eagle. Claude had his heart set on being a bald eagle and tries everything he can think of to trade birds with Charles. First he makes fun of him, and then he offers to give Charles his red truck and yellow airplane. But Charles stands firm although secretly he is afraid he cannot sound very much like a Bald Eagle. Does he overcome his uncertainty?

Not all of the fun takes place in classrooms. There are also other adventures for children ages 3 - 8 to follow as they learn about their friends and themselves.

- Gail Cooke

2.0 out of 5 stars Stories Not Appropriate for All Kids, February 1, 2005
We really like the television show "Timothy Goes to School" and so we searched out this book. Unlike the show, however, I found that these stories are not very nice. For example, in "Charles Stands Tall", Charles is humiliated for being small and shy. My kids (3 and 5) were distressed by the story line particularly about the part where Charles is bullied and may fun of. Page 29 sums it up well. "Charles did not cry until he got off the school bus."

Likewise in another chapter, a beaver named Doris is called `fat' and `too big'. When she is nicknamed "Tubette," the teacher does nothing about the bullying but instead allows the children to carry on and giggle at Doris' expense. Perhaps others will think this is alright because her family steps in and offers her support in the way of diet and exercise, but to me this is just too mean spirited. Plus, I don't like the message at the end where the main bully compliments Doris on her efforts and says, "(s)oon you will be nice and thin like me."

This might be great for some kids, but I can't recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Problematic, But a Decent Set of Stories, February 4, 2006
By George Buttner "Agent0042" (Dayton, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This may not be the best storybook, and I also agree that the TV series is better, but this really isn't too bad a book.

This book is a set of six stories --- "Fritz Tries Again," "Buried Treasure," "Charles Stands Tall," "Tubbette," "Timothy Takes the Cake," "Laughing on the Inside." These stories are fairly nicely illustrated and generally fun, funny and interesting, although the dialogue seems a bit unnatural at times and some of the stories are a bit odd.

There are some great lessons, such as believing in your potential and not giving up. The songs that the teacher Mrs. Jenkins sings are also cute. But, as has been mentioned, some things just don't work, such as the "Tubbette" story, which seems to convey a rather odd message. I don't think the "Charles Stands Tall" story is too bad, though. Charles manages to stand up for himself and doesn't let the teasing negatively effect him.
