Format: Paperback
A fascinating look at the people and culture and who they really
were in England.

Professor Richards specialises in the archaeology of Anglo-Saxon
and Viking Age England.

This encyclopaedic study brings together research on the Age of
The Vikings in the Isle called England. Compelling myths, legends
and bare bones of facts of very important three centuries of
history. This book cover themes that have long preoccupied the
popular imagination of many.

Certainly, background material for those of us who care!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Harry on April 2, 2015
Format: Paperback
This is an interesting review of key aspects of life in the centuries (ninth to eleventh) of Viking attack on, and settlement in, England. Surprisingly, in most aspects the Anglo-Saxon culture appeared to have more impact on the Vikings than the reverse. The major impact the Vikings had, other than the initial localised destruction and disruption, was to break up the large Anglo-Saxon manorial landholdings to make land available to the Scandinavian settlers – and this did of course have ramifications, probably precipitating the growth of towns (initially for defence and then for displaced locals). Outside of this, there appears to be little evidence of significant change. The analysis of Viking names (both personal and for place – those ending with ‘by’ and ‘thorp’) and the mapping of this helps demonstrate the areas of greatest Viking influence.

The book includes excellent photos of findings from hoards, burials and archaeological digs and plenty of maps to illustrate findings. All up, a fine coverage of the period that avoids the sensational and doesn’t dwell on the pillaging, providing a more expansive understanding of these times. But, the book does miss a timeline of key events over this period, which would have been useful in rounding this out.

Takes a generally archaeological approach, describing what has been found; rather than giving a coherent narrative based on lots of conjecture and extrapolation. Nice to see quite a few references to villages local to where I grew up, that I wasn't aware had Viking remains!

Unfortunately the Kindle version is missing the plates. It only has the in-text black&white line drawings.
