Rather than a book written by John Pryor, this is in fact a collection of 13 studies from a range of historians and that Pryor has edited. He has also written a "Digest" which concludes the book and an introduction where, by "modelling Bohemond's march to Thessalonike" in 1096, he estimates the likely size and composition of his force and the most likely route that they followed. I found that all pieces varied from very good to excellent.

Two of my favorites are John Haldon's "Roads and communications in the Byzantine Empire: wagons, horses and supplies" (chapter 8) and Allan Murray's "Money and logistics in the force of the First Crusade: coinage, bullion, service and supply, 1096-1099" (chapter 12). Both draw on each of the authors' previous work. The first, for instance, develops some of the elements already presented in his book on "warfare, state and society in the byzantine world", showing how logistical limitations had a large impact on the size of armies, their composition, and the routes that they were likely to follow and along which sufficient resources (mainly food and water) could be found.

I am not saying that the other studies are inferior in any way because in fact they are all good (which is not so common in collected studies). I was only implying that I was less convinced by them. So, this is only about personal preferences, as opposed to any views as to whether the studies were "good" or "bad".

For instance, the study on the logistics of the Mongol-Mamluk war of 1299 shows how the need to suppply tends of thousands of horses affected the former and limited the range and scale of their invasions.

I can't add much more than what JPS has written other than I was a bit surprised at the number of typos, such as 'bagage' and 'ninteenth'. That doesn't bother me as I know what they meant, and more importantly, it is clear the authors went to great lengths to maintain correct transcriptions (as written) of the period Latin texts (which is really all I care about when it comes to spelling).

The work that's been poured into these essays is simply amazing.

Inside:
(1) Bohemond's march to Thessalonike, John H. Pryor
(2) The logistics of the Mongol-Mamluk war, Reuven Amitai
(3) Crusader logistics: from victory at Nicaea to resupply at Dorylaion, Bernard S. Bachrach
(4) Ship types and fleet composition at Genoa and Venice in the early 13th century, John E. Dotson
(5) Logistics and the Second Crusade, John France
(6) Harbours and facilities along the eastern Mediterranean sea lanes to Outremer, Ruthy Gertwagen
(7) Provisioning Peter the Hermit: from Cologne to Constantinople, 1096, Charles R. Glasheen
(8) Roads and communications in the Byzantine Empire: wagons, horses, and supplies, John Haldon
(9) Reflections on maps, crusading, and logistics, Benjamin Z. Kedar
(10)Infantry in Muslim armies during the Crusades, Yaacov Lev
(11)Food and the Fourth Crusade, Thomas F. Madden
(12)Money and logistics in the forces of the First Crusade: coinage, bullion, supply, Alan V. Murray
(13)The Northern Crusaders: the logistics of English and other Northern Crusader fleets, Richard W. Unger

I have to mention I own two other books by Unger
