I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so much so I read through it in a weekend. The subject, the West Point Class of 1915, produced an extraordinary number of generals. This is well-known to many readers. Where this book succeeds in bringing a fresh approach is in its depiction of these men as an average cross-section of Americans who went far in the service of their country. Many authors look at men like Eisenhower and Bradley and write of them as if it were pre-ordained they would attain greatness. Here you see how they often came from poor, working-class origins and had to struggle against the vagaries of life to succeed. There was no guarantee any of them would even get into West Point, much less graduate. Once they did gain a commission, the real work began and the author does a creditable job showing how they faced the challenges of army life during WWI and between the wars, when budgets were thin and promotion slow. When WWII came, these men who were junior officers in the first war were now senior officers and now had to face that challenge.
I have always enjoyed reading "Band of Brothers"-type books because even when they flood the market, they work. Those types of books are fun to read and relatable. This is that style of book; rather than tell you the story of a single company, however, you are getting the same treatment but of the men who ran the entire army and led it to victory in humanity's greatest conflict. This book is well-worth reading.

I've been very impressed reading this history of the West Point class of 1915. The author does a great job of entertaining the reader with anecdotes about these remarkable men. For example, Eisenhower almost didn't get his commission because of a knee injury and when the examining doctor explained the circumstances to him, Ike actually said that it didn't mean that much to him and he was thinking of living in Argentina for a few years as an alternative to a commission! Ike was also way down the list at West Point in the conduct department and had many demerits to "walk-off" each semester. This is the kind of book that could have been a thousand pages long and I would have still enjoyed reading every page. Highly recommended.

West Point 1915, Eisenhower, Bradley, and the Class the Stars Fell On. By Michael E. Haskew. Zenith Press. 2014. ISBN 978-0-7603-4652-5
Photographs. Endnotes. Bibliography. Index. $30.00

This work is unusual in that it takes just about every member who graduated in the Class of 1915 and provides at least a paragraph on him, obviously more information on the more famous members, there is evidence of a real depth of research.

The West Point Class of 1915 graduated one hundred sixty four men. Fifty-nine of them ultimately wore the Stars of General Officers.

A ‘clean sleeve’ at West Point denotes the absence of cadet rank; in effect a cadet Private, which depending on the historic time period could mean different things. For example in the Class of 1915 if you had some rank you were a leader. In later years when it was the custom to promote all of the 1st Class – seniors – to Sgt. to be a ‘clean sleeve’ then indicated some sort of punishment.

Without a doubt the best-known member of the Class was Dwight David (Ike) Eisenhower, General of the Armies, President of the U.S.
Ike was passionate about golf, and from 1948 to his death he was a member of Augusta National, the home of the Masters Tournament. There was a tree about 210 yards to the left of the tee and the fairway on the 17th hole, that he was reputed to have hit several times. In 1956 at a board of governors meeting, he proposed cutting it down.
One of Ike’s significant civilian accomplishments was the signing of the Federal Aid Highway Act on June 29, 1956, which authorized the Interstate Highway System.
At one point in his military career Ike was assigned to General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines. When his tour was over he was asked to stay, and refused.

I enjoyed this book very much. It was informative but at the same time kept my interest in the great men of the class of 1915.
Highly recommend this book if you're interested in history and World War II.

Gives a perspective on Westpoints value to America throughout decades of Americas most crucial moments in an easy to read manner that leaves me scratching my head at the magnitude and power of a country founded on a belief in God with enough innocence that truly changed the world forever. Mr. Haskew has done a remarkable thing for us and history by writing this book.

As a 1980's West Point grad, I enjoyed reading this book. A lot of the book was dedicated to the well known 1915 grads, but it did not neglect other lesser known grads. By and large, I found it well researched. I enjoyed reading about the past connections of various graduates at the Academy or during their military service. Some of the Academy descriptions were familiar (if not nostalgic).

It would be a very interesting to research and write a historical comparison between the the class of 1846, from which General Jackson and other generals graduated, and the class of 1915. There are many similarities. Both classes produced quite a number of generals. Both classes faced a crisis not just militarily, but socially and economically.
