Definitely a good choice for reading to your kids. The book is printed on high-quality paper with an extremely good looking font that makes it a comfortable read even in low light. The colorful pictures in every other page makes it easier to engage the kids.

One of my favorite books as a child was Edward Gorey's Rumplestilskin. I looked high and low for a copy of this book when my daughter was born and I am absolutely thrilled they've decided to reissue this classic with new prose. Love it!

This isn't a simple re-issue, it contains changes that will interest both new and seasoned Gorey readers. For a start, all three stories are rewritten, retold by James Donnelly. For another, the illustrations wear new colors. Actually, the re-coloring of 'Rumpelstiltskin' is more a resurrection. The dust jacket artwork for the original 1973 'Rumplestiltskin' was finished in watercolor, while the story's illustrations remained black and a marigold-yellow. This time, Pomegranate's artists gave it a makeover, guided by Gorey's palette from the original jacket art. It's very well done. 'Jack the Giant Killer' on the other hand, is practically a new work. The original's black and tangerine palette makes Jack's costume change welcome. 'Red Riding Hood's red cloak is still as red as red can be, with only the subtlest addition of new tints. All in all, the artwork throughout is nicely uplifted. The new colorizing effort is engaging, and follows Gorey's esthetic.
James Donnelly merrily undertakes the retelling of these old stories, and now all three read more like modern narratives. One way Donnelly brings these old tales home is to plant small, unexpected nods to Gorey's influence here and there. Jumping between the old Gorey versions and new was also amusing, for they're all completely different creatures now, and have different affects. 'Three Classic Children's Stories' is a real treat, and worth a place in the kids' library, classroom and Gorey collection. It's also a great way to bring some of Gorey's lesser-known classics to the fore.

James Donnelly's retelling of these three fairy tales blend both the original stories and Donnelly's wit into an enjoyable book. Unlike some updated fairy tales, Donnelly stays true to the traditional fairy tale - Red Riding Hood, Rumplestiltskin, and Jack the Giant-Killer - but gives the characters personality and the stories details to make them quite funny.
The late illustrator Edward Gorey's drawings are wonderful and Donnelly sometimes refers directly to their content, or to Gorey himself, but the writing and illustrations stay in balance one with the other. I had expected that the illustrations would be the primary appeal - Gorey gets top billing on the cover - but Donnelly holds his (and her, since Cecily Donnelly is credited on Red Riding Hood) own.
This is a great book to be read to children, and also for slightly older children who will appreciate the humor Donnelly brings to these familiar tales.
