Beautiful Patterns

I just received this book in the mail yesterday, and I've spent some time going through the designs. I'm comfortable with a lot of different chainmaille patterns, and would consider myself advanced. This book offers a lot of very nice patterns that seem easy to follow, and make beautiful pieces.

However, there are two negatives to this book. First is the smell. It has an overwhelming chemical smell (not sure what it is, but I'm sure it is connected to the printing). Hopefully with time, this will fade. I have had trouble looking through the book for more than 10-15 minutes at a time.

My second problem with the book is that the jump ring measurements are given for sterling silver only. This means, if you want to make base metal pieces, you have to figure out the AR for each ring and then convert it from AWG to SWG. I don't know about everyone else that makes chainmaille jewelry but I can't afford to work in sterling silver all the time. It would have been nice if the author included measurements for SWG as well.

Overall though, it is a very nice book.

I read all the reviews prior to purchase and with a 4 1/2 star rating I ordered the book. So... when the book arrived, I dove right in. What a disappointment! Although the pictures of the completed projects are vivid and beautiful, the pictures in each frame of the instructions leave a lot to be desired~~they are blurry and of poor quality to say the least. In the intro of the book, the author suggests to purchase her first book, which I was planning on doing, but now that I've gone through the entire book, I'm a skeptic~~I don't want more of the same!

photos not the best

Bought this for my wife who has been doing chain maille for 5 years and is very capable and competent.
The aspect ratio (AR) was one complaint she had although she no longer uses SWG wire.
And although the new designs were very nice, the accompanying photos left a lot to be desired.
Photos were fuzzy and not as sharp as most chain maille books. It was difficult to see some of the ring weaves with the poor photos. I know the description is in the text, but the reason for buying the book was to have decent assembly photos.
I think she will go to the internet to see if there are better photos.
I'm glad we didn't pay full price for this book.

The best Advanced patterns

I was looking for a book with more designs and this is it. Very creative ideas. Some of the patterns are very intricate but they are doable. Just follow her instructions and you will create the item. If your are into Chain mail Jewelry and want something new - this is it.

Same weaves as other books. Pictures low quality.

As a somewhat experienced chainmailler, I was looking for some ideas on incorporating beads into designs. This book did have some ideas for that, I just didn't care much for them. I didn't like being able to see the beginning and ending of the beading wire and crimp through the chain maille. I think a polished finished piece should hide such connections. Also as another reviewer mentioned, the pictures were very low quality. I sent this book back.

Chain maille

I bought this book as a gift and it was greatly appreciated. I saw it advertised in a jewelry magazine and checked it out on Amazon books. I looked inside before I gave it, and the designs are beautiful, the instructions look easy to follow. Each design has several photos of the finished piece, materials list and instructions with easy to follow pictures. The book arrived very fast and was in excellent condition, I couldn't be happier. I also requested the recipient to make me one of the project, now I can't wait to get it and show it off.

Classic Chain Mail Jewelry With A Twist by Sue Ripsch

This is yet another wonderfully printed and illustrated book by Kalmbach Books.

This is my first experience with chain mail. I have been wanting to give it a try for a long time. I found the book to be well written with a precise material list and step-by-step instructions. I was able to follow them well for being a novice and not familiar with all the terminology. Although the book is written using silver wire, I was able to convert to metal wire because Sue gave the wire gauge in her materials list. The pictures are clear and helpful in following along through the instructions.

The introduction information includes how to make your own jump rings, tumbling, and aspect ratio. The information about aspect ratio is very informative and will be useful when making my own jump rings. The projects are divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced weaves. I like the way many of the beginner weaves are also used in the intermediate weaves, so one is able to build on their skills. There are even projects with beads interwoven into the construction and variations with different colors of jump rings & types. I like to use my own creativity and this book allows for that. I'm glad to have it in my repertoire.

Great Chainmaille Designs

This is the second book from Sue Ripsch that I own and can't wait for her next book. Sue's design directions are easy to follow and the results are gorgeous. This came just in time for gift giving at Christmas and other winter holidays.

The price is right and I highly recommend the book to anyone who works with rings. From beginner to advanced, there is something for everyone and easy to follow directions!

Keep designing Sue! I love your work!
