Product Description

Flamboyent. Ornamental. Unconventional.
An unprecedented exploration into Rococo style.

Rococo: The Continuing Curve, which accompanies a major exhibition opening March 2008 at the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, is a groundbreaking work exploring the sensuous and organic rococo style and its many revivals (such as art nouveau) from the early eighteenth century up to the present day in multiple fields, including furniture, decorative arts, prints, drawings, and textiles. More than 300 lavish full-color illustrations and more than a dozen original essays chart the progress of style as it radiated from master craftsmen in Paris throughout France, England, Germany, the Netherlands, and other European countries, and later crossed the Atlantic to the United States. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new look at art history., May 22, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I will keep this short. This was an amazing show, tight and well presented. The book, which covers the show, is so well done, you could almost believe you had been there.

The show's, and book's, concept is that "Rococo" is not just a stylistic period of the 18th century, but a way of mankind's seeing and expressing itself when certain key social forces come together. The concept is interesting and does much to explain the revival of the forms of the Rococo throughout history, freeing it from the strictures of 18th century aristocratic European society, which has been the traditional view heretofore. Great pictures and well-researched text make the point quite well and gives anyone with a real interest in art history and sociology much to consider.

5.0 out of 5 stars The exhibition at home, October 24, 2008
It's a pleasure to continue enjoying the exhibition at home and for as long as I may read and keep such a wonderful book, containing interesting topical articles and fantastic photographs both of the objects contained at the Cooper-Hewitt and other items not displayed.
Exhibition catalogues are an excellent form of keeping abreast in research work in History of Art, as well as an interesting collectible.
