Product Description
The most haunted neighborhood in America? With more than 45 square blocks of wonderful hundred-year-old mansions and charming town homes, Old Louisville counts as the largest Victorian neighborhood in the nation. Given that there are more than 1,000 structures in all where generations of families have lived, loved and died, it is not surprising that there might be a ghost or two knocking about in this acclaimed National Register Historic Preservation District. So many so, in fact, that Old Louisville has also gained the reputation as being the most haunted neighborhood in the country. David Dominé found this out for himself when he purchased a lovely 1895 chateauesque mansion on Old Louisville's famed Millionaire's Row in 1999. A self-proclaimed skeptic, he dismissed rumors of a mischievous resident poltergeist named Lucy when he moved in, but he soon found himself at a loss to explain the disembodied footsteps, mysterious odors and paranormal activity that plagued the old home. Even after unnerving events caused him to flee the home in the middle of the night, Dominé tried to come up with rational explanations for the strange occurrences. Gradually, however, he came to accept the possibility of supernatural phenomena and began to dig into the past of the old home known by locals as the Moorish Palace. He eventually came up with a theory as to who or what might be haunting the property, and in the process he was able to uncover a wealth of fascinating history and ghostly tales about his historic neighborhood. Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood chronicles the harrowing events in his own home and discusses the haunted past of other significant structures in the neighborhood. Rich with interesting historical tidbits and vivid architectural descriptions that bring the opulent mansions and charming homes to life, Dominé creates an enchanting mood piece as a backdrop for his tales of the paranormal in this unique American neighborhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWSOME BOOK!, June 23, 2006
By Gary Garnet (New Hampshire, New England!) - See all my reviews
I found this review in MYSTERIES MAGAZINE (a great mag, by the way!), and it pretty much sums up my thoughts on this book. Thanks to Janet Brennan!

There are many books of ghost stories that focus on a single geographical area and this book follows this format by describing the hauntings of Old Louisville, a residential neighborhood in Louisville, KY.
Unlike so many other similar books written by outsiders who simply rehash old legends gleaned from other publications or local rumor, David Domine is able to go right to the source for his 10 stories. He not only visits the sites, but also chats up the owners and visits the haunted homes. He tracks down former owners and neighbors, and quizzes locals he meets while out walking his dog or visiting a coffee shop. This time-consuming detective work pays off handsomely with a wealth of historical facts and backstories of the ghosts that would not be available to nonlocal writers. The eyewitness information fleshes out the ghosts, helping the reader to know them as real people who met tragic ends, rather than just Halloween caricatures.
A second unique aspect of this book is that the author's own home is one of the haunted houses. When Domine bought the beautiful Widmer House, built in 1895, a few years ago, the seller told him it had a ghost, but he did not take the comment seriously. The situation gets dead serious, however, once he moves in and begins hearing strange creaks and loud crashes, and smelling aromas that have no visible source. He is not ashamed to recount instances of footsteps approaching his bed in the night that cause him to run literally from the house in terror. His first-person account of a haunting makes this chapter the most spine-tingling one in the book, and is a good reminder that while ghosts are a lot of fun to read about, they are absolutely nerve-shattering to live with.
The third commendable thing about this book is the quality of the writing. Domine writes for magazines and is the author of a novel and several cookbooks. His journalistic expertise enables him to pack the book with plenty of historical facts and figures, while his fiction background contributes a novelist's flair for dialog and description that spice up what could otherwise be a dry recitation of dusty legends. Even his cooking skills come into play with descriptions of dinner-party fare that will make the reader's mouth water.
The book is enhanced by photographs of each haunted site. A handy street map showing the haunted locations is also included, so visitors to Old Louisville can take a self-guided ghost tour. And it might be possible to actually see some ghosts, as several of the haunts take place outdoors in public areas.
Domine ends each chapter with a section that gives the history of either the haunted site or an associated building, making the book educational as well as entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll love this book, I promise!, July 12, 2005
By Roger Martin (St. Louis) - See all my reviews
If you are hesitating about whether to get this book or not, don't wait another minute. Get it now. It is great, in fact one of the best reads I've had in a long time. The author has an incredible gift with language that allows the reader to forget him- or herself for a while and enter a wonderful turn-of-the-century world in Louisville's most charming neighborhood. Although the stories might give you chills every now and then (how delicious!), the solid history and grounded language will more than compensate. In a world where everyone's getting published nowadays, it is oh-so-refreshing to find this peach in the large basket of lemons we call the world of publishing today. (OK, there was the one or two minor typos the editor missed, but this happens to top selling authors!) This book is well-conceived and executed, the subject matter is intriguing and fills a wonderful niche, and it achieves that marvelous aim that all books should strive for - but alas fall far short of - : it whisks the reader away to a different world where he is entertained and informed. WONDERFUL!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghosts of Old Louisville - Great Storytelling, July 8, 2005
By L. W. HORAN (Scottsburg, IN) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I could not put this book down! Each chapter mixes a bit of storytelling with local history of Old Louisville in such a way that the reader feels they can see Old Louisville in its prime and experience the stories first hand. As I am driving through the area in the future, I will be looking over my shoulder and watching very carefully for the spirit of Jenny Bowman on Brook Street and Hattie Bishop Speed at the Speed Musuem. The book read so well that I can't wait for any future books the author might be planning. A must read!!
